The company confirmed on Tuesday that it is cutting 60 jobs, and did not provide a reason for the layoffs. Affected employees may apply to other available jobs at TikTok, where there are now over 120 job postings that are comparable.

TikTok, the social media platform known for its short-form video content, is shedding 60 jobs in its advertising and sales unit, marking the latest in a wave of layoffs across the tech industry. The layoffs come as the tech industry continues to shed jobs in the new year. TikTok is owned by Beijing-based ByteDance and is used by over 150 million users in the US. The affected employees will be allowed to apply for other open positions at TikTok, however it's unknown how many of them will be available or how many of the affected employees will be able to find other employment at the company. The company hasn't given an explanation for the layoffs.

The layoffs at TikTok follow other job cuts at major tech companies this year, including at social media platforms like Discord and Twitch. In September, TikTok launched an e-commerce arm and a marketplace. The company has been expanding its offerings beyond short-form video content, but the layoffs suggest that it may be facing challenges in its advertising and sales unit.

The tech employment tracking website layoffs.fyi reports that the tech sector has lost over 10,000 jobs so far this year.
