The Comet is a new external storage solution which is currently available as part of an ongoing crowdfunding campaign. More specifically, the SSD is only available on Kickstarter for three more days as the more or less symbolic funding goal of around $3,086 has already been exceeded by a huge margin.
For a contribution of at least $130, backers can reserve the 1TB base model of this new solid-state drive, which is expected to start shipping in May. However, this is a crowdfunding campaign from an unknown and unproven company, so prospective backers should be aware that they could potentially lose their money and get nothing in return. For the faint of heart, there are numerous portable SSDs from well-known brands available on Amazon.
That being said, the Comet measures about 2.7 x 2 x 0.6 inches and weighs 2.8oz. The SSD further sports a comes with enclosure made of aluminum, which can contribute to dissipating the heat of the TLC NAND. The case is also protected against dust and water according to the IP65 standard.
This external SSD supports Thunderbolt 5 which is a state-of-the-art connectivity option that uses the well-known USB Type-C port. The manufacturer also advertises very high transfer speeds of up to 7,000 megabytes per second.
Even many internal SSDs, such as the Crucial T700, do not offer this type of performance. Therefore, it is quite likely that the mass storage of a PC or an older interface could become a bottleneck when using the Comet TB5 SSD. Either way, the solid-state drive is offered in three different configurations and comes with 1TB, 2TB or 4TB of storage capacity.
