The HMD Fusion X1 is one of the few new products announced by HMD at MWC 2025. Described as a first smartphone for teens
, the HMD Fusion X1 is borne from HMD's The Better Phone Project, and was designed in partnership with Xplora, a company known for making smartwatches for kids.
Following a survey of 25,000 parents and children across Australia, India, the UAE, the UK, and the US, HMD decided to create a line of smartphones designed for children with safety features in place. Considering the survey revealed several children had been harassed, bullied, or contacted by strangers, it is obvious that kids need phones that can keep them safe online and offline.
The HMD Fusion X1 is the first smartphone from the new portfolio of products, but it is actually a modified version of the HMD Fusion modular phone (curr. available on Amazon for $299.99) announced in 2024. The main difference between the HMD Fusion X1 and the regular version is that the former has a custom software that provides parents with control over their kid's smartphone.
With a monthly subscription that costs €4.99 per month, parents will be able to set up location alerts, approve apps, set screen time schedules, and vet and approve contacts. Also, parents will be able to see in real time the location of their child. They will also be able to set safe zones for up to ten places and get notified when their ward enters and exits them. Another feature is the ability to view up to the last three days of their location history.
The HMD Fusion X1 will also provide parents with the ability to limit or prevent social media access and also have a school mode so that distractions are minimized. It will also have emergency SOS calling, low battery alerts, and remote access for the parents.
For the kids, they get a modern but safe smartphone. They will be able to ask for more screen time remotely from their parents. Also, since the phone is practically the HMD Fusion, they get features like a 108MP rear camera and a handful of case attachments such as the Fusion Gaming Outfit, Fusion Rugged Outfit, and Fusion Flashy Outfit, all of which attaches to the back of the phone. There's also the benefit of the phone being easily repairable.
HMD hasn't announced details about pricing and availability of the HMD Fusion X1 but interested buyers can sign up on the HMD website to be notified when new details of the phone are released.
