The ROG Strix G18 is a large 18-inch gaming laptop from Asus, which is more affordable compared to the high-end Strix SCAR series. We just reviewed the configuration for 2299 Euros, which is equipped with a very powerful AMD processor (Ryzen 9 9955HX) in combination with 32 GB RAM, a 1 TB SSD as well as a responsive 240 Hz IPS screen. You also get features like USB 4.0, a fast PCIe 5.0 interface for high-speed SSDs, Advanced Optimus GPU switching as well as G-Sync, only the current Wi-Fi 7 standard is missing.
However, you only get the Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 Laptop GPU. It is the fastest version with a TGP of 115 Watts, but the performance is just slightly better compared to the old RTX 4070 Laptop and the VRAM is once again limited to just 8 GB. Combined with the WQHD resolution of the screen, this can already cause issues while gaming (Indiana Jones or Call of Duty Black ops 6, for example), which is mainly noticeable due to frame drops. We already reported about this issue in our analysis of the new RTX 5070 Laptop GPU.
We already talked about the unbalanced configuration with the extremely powerful AMD processor in our full review. We would have preferred the faster GeForce RTX 5070 Ti Laptop (12 GB VRAM) in combination with a slightly slower CPU option. We must slightly criticize the cooling unit as well. At around 50 dB(A) under load, the Strix G18 is a bit quieter than many rivals, but the fans are pretty much running all the time, even under very light workloads.
