The Nintendo Switch 2 has finally launched and along with the criticism about the display, the Welcome Tour game has become another point of complaints. The reason being those who want to fully complete the game will require additional accessories, besides paying for the game which should have been included with the console purchase to begin with.
Welcome Tour is a game/app for the Switch 2 that allows users to experience the features of the console. There are 34 minigames and tech demos as part of 12 exhibitions. Some of these minigames, however, require accessories like the USB camera and a controller with GL/GR buttons (Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller or Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip) while others demand a 4K TV or monitor (via Nintendo Soup) to fully complete. Not everyone would be inclined to purchase the Nintendo Switch 2 Camera ($55) or have a 4K TV at home, but they will have to invest in one if they want to fully complete the game. The Pro Controller costs $85 but the Charging Grip is included in the package. Notably, all 12 exhibitions can be accessed without these accessories.
The Welcome Tour game costs $10 and back when it was announced as an additional purchase, fans were disappointed, to say the least. Since it shows off the capabilities of the console, it should have been a free download, if not pre-loaded (with an option to uninstall).
As for the Switch 2 display, YouTuber GamingTech has uncovered that the LCD panel is not all that it has been cracked up to be. The peak brightness came to 422 nits with 0.5 nits for black areas. This results in a low contrast ratio of 844:1 which makes HDR pretty mediocre. The black levels are a clear downgrade compared to the Switch OLED, as well as all modern smartphones. What the Switch 2’s display does excel in is the higher 120 Hz refresh rate capability, the 1080p resolution, and the overall size, compared to the original Switch.
