In Devil May Cry 5, players step into the shoes of three demon hunters: Dante, Nero and V – as they take on a dark force tearing Red Grave City apart. Each character offers a unique playstyle: Dante brings classic combo-heavy combat with four fighting styles and a wide range of switchable weapons, Nero leans into raw power with his mechanical Devil Breaker arms and V fights from a distance by commanding demonic allies. While most missions are tied to a specific character, some levels let players choose who to bring into the fight.
At the core of Devil May Cry 5 lies its signature Style Rating System, which grades each battle from D ("Dismal") to SSS ("Smokin' Sexy Style!!"). Players can freely mix up attacks, weapons and evasive moves, with high scores going to those who fight fast, sharp and with flair. The soundtrack ramps up with your performance – the better you fight, the more intense the music becomes. The game's combat system is widely praised for its depth and creative freedom, often ranked among the best in the genre. With six difficulty levels and a New Game Plus mode, it also offers plenty of replay value.
Brilliant combat system in a monotonous game world
The German magazin GameStar reviewed Devil May Cry 5 at launch and especially praised its dynamic combat system. Each of the three demon hunters brings a distinct playstyle, keeping the action fresh, while the Style Rating System rewards skilled and creative gameplay. On the downside, the review noted the level design can feel repetitive and the story is a bit uneven. Early difficulty levels were also seen as too easy, offering little challenge for series veterans. Still, thanks to its outstanding combat mechanics, GameStar gave DMC 5 a strong 83 out of 100.
Devil May Cry 5, developed by CAPCOM, launched in March 2019 and has since earned a glowing reputation. On Steam, it boasts over 90,000 reviews, with 96% of them positive. The reception on Metacritic is just as strong, with a Metascore of 89 and a User Score of 8.5.
