Steam currently has an interesting offer for strategy fans who enjoy base-building. Forts, a physics-based multiplayer RTS, is free to play until September 1. After that, the game will be available at 50% off until September 3.

Forts, developed by EarthWork Games and released in April 2017, combines strategic base-building with chaotic Worms-style destruction. Players construct fortresses, manage resources and stockpile weapons to take out the enemy’s reactor while protecting their own from the same fate. The campaign includes 28 missions and twelve commanders, each with unique abilities. A multiplayer mode lets players put their building and combat skills to the test in both duels and team battles.

In terms of gameplay, Forts offers real-time, physics-based fortress building, letting players construct everything from mines and energy generators to walls and weapons. The arsenal is diverse, ranging from machine guns and plasma cannons to EMP missiles. Because weapons are fired manually, aim and positioning are crucial to landing a hit. The game also supports the Steam Workshop, giving players access to a wide range of mods – like new maps, weapons and entire tech trees – adding even more variety to the experience.

Players praise Forts for its impressive strategic depth, offering countless ways to defeat the enemy – from missile strikes and heavy artillery to powerful laser weapons. Despite its complexity, the core concept is easy to grasp, making it accessible even for newcomers to the RTS genre. Criticism, however, is directed at the multiplayer: the absence of a ranking system often pits beginners against seasoned veterans, leading to frustrating matches. The tutorial is also considered sluggish, while the visuals and tech feel somewhat dated. On Steam, Forts currently boasts over 22,000 reviews, with 91% rated positive. On Metacritic, the game holds a Metascore of 74 and a User Score of 8.0.

Free trial on Steam – 50% discount afterward

Forts usually sells for around $15 on Steam but is free to play until September 1. Players who want to keep playing can pick it up for half price – about $7.50 – until September 3. According to SteamDB, this discount has been offered several times before, but the game has never dropped below this price.
