Only users in Japan are expected to pay a token amount for the upgrade to the title when it arrives with support for the additional hardware capabilities that the Nintendo Switch 2 offers.

The Nintendo Direct showcase held on September 12, 2025, brought welcome news for existing owners of Stardew Valley via its sole developer, Eric Barone, who goes by the title ConcernedApe on X.

The lone wolf developer revealed that the Nintendo Switch 2 upgrade for Stardew Valley will be free for players who already own a copy of the game on the original Switch.

In a follow-up post on X, ConcernedApe shared a major update about Stardew Valley Switch 2 Edition’s accessibility for existing players:

“This will be a free upgrade for those who own Stardew Valley on the Switch, except in Japan, where legally it has to cost something, so it will cost the minimum possible amount.”

This will allow Switch players who own the game to get the enhanced edition for free. ConcernedApe also earlier confirmed that the Switch 2 version will introduce mouse support using the JoyCon 2, giving players a closer experience to PC. The game will support four-player split-screen co-op using Switch 2’s GameShare feature, requiring only one copy of the game.

Furthermore, ConcernedApe also announced that Stardew Valley’s 1.7 update is currently in development, dispelling any rumors suggesting that the developer might go on a break from the game to focus on his upcoming title, Haunted Chocolatier.

Still, details about patch 1.7 remain unknown. However, the game has enjoyed multiple expansions, including March 2024’s update, which added new festivals, quests, alongside modding support.

ConcernedApe has always put the Stardew Valley community first, and the free Switch 2 upgrade for users who already own the game is proof of that. This is also driven by the fact that Stardew Valley has generated around $450 million with over 30 million copies sold across all platforms, with 7.9 million copies sold on the original Nintendo Switch.

Stardew Valley’s Switch 2 upgrade will arrive this fall, though no official release date has been revealed by Nintendo or ConcernedApe so far.

Furthermore, Nintendo announced the re-release of Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 on the Switch 2 with promises of an improved UI, allowing players to alternate between motion and gamepad controls.

In other news, for users looking to grab another co-op title with their savings on Stardew Valley, Super Mario Bros. Wonder is returning with a new expansion known as Meetup in Bellabel Park, where players can play co-op party games with their friends or other players online.
