During an interview at the Reuters NEXT conference in New York, OpenAI CFO Sarah Frair fielded questions about the impact of President-elect Donald Trump, saying that he could end up being the "president of this AI generation."
Frair believes that Trump will take over at a time when critical infrastructure is in place for the next big leap in AI - Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). "He's going to be right there at the beginning of it, maybe even as things like AGI, we get there," said Frair.
AGI is a theoretical concept of an AI with human-like intelligence, versatile enough to perform tasks across different domains. Silicon Valley's brightest, like Google, Microsoft, Apple, and Amazon, are already committed to research on AGI.
OpenAI's Sora video generator has also seen huge demand. First revealed in February this year, Sora has since rolled out in a limited capacity, and the company shut down account creations amid heavy web traffic.
Frair said the limited availability was due to "capacity but a lot of it is also we want to be measured...it's only available to a very small selection of people today, because we want to listen and learn."
"There are places where we will go a little slower to make sure that we are constantly moving safety first as well." Frair added.
Speaking on Elon Musk, who has publicly opposed OpenAI becoming a for-profit company, Frair said OpenAI trusts him "as a competitor, (he) will put first the national interest and compete appropriately."
Frair also anticipates more AI agents out in the wild soon. AI agents are autonomous bots capable of handling specific tasks without human intervention.
"I think we are going to see a lot of motion next year around agents, and I think people are going to be surprised at how fast this technology comes at us," Frair told Reuters.
