The Nintendo 2DS is no longer supported officially by Nintendo in terms of repairs, with the company citing a lack of parts to maintain the service.

Nintendo has officially ended repair services for the New Nintendo 2DS XL, ending official support for the entire Nintendo 3DS lineup. This announcement was made on September 4, 2025, as the company continues to gradually phase out repair support for the beloved handheld, which arrived on the gaming scene in 2011.

The New Nintendo 2DS XL, the final model released by Nintendo in the 3DS lineup was discontinued service repairs amid depletion of available replacement parts. According to Nintendo’s statement posted on X:

“As we have run out of parts needed for repairs, we have discontinued repair services for the New Nintendo 2DS XL as of September 4, 2025. Repairs for all other Nintendo 3DS series systems have also been discontinued.”

The end of repairs marks the end of life of Nintendo’s most beloved handheld systems, as the company prioritizes its flagship handheld console, the Nintendo Switch 2.

The Nintendo 3DS family comprises models such as the original 3DS, 3DS XL, 2DS, New 3DS, New 3DS XL, and New 2DS XL. The 3DS managed to sell over 75 million units worldwide by June 30, 2025, since its debut in 2011.

The 2DS XL launched in 2017 and was basically the last major hardware refresh, featuring a clamshell design without stereoscopic 3D, and support for the entire Nintendo 3DS games catalog, including games like Pokémon Sun and Moon, The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, Mario Kart 7, and Super Mario 3D Land.

Nintendo had earlier ended repairs for the original 3DS and 3DS XL in 2021, followed by the New 3DS and 2DS in August and March 2024. Finally, repairs for the New 2DS XL have ended as of September 4, 2025.

The end of support does come with its challenges, as many fans and collectors still own and play games on the 3DS. As time passes, sourcing components such as batteries, buttons, and screens has become increasingly challenging. While the 3DS lineup was known to be rugged and durable, the New 2DS XL was prone to hinge issues, prompting many users to turn over the console to third-party shops.

This change comes after Nintendo wound down the 3DS eShop in March 2023, eliminating the ability of players to digital games, followed by the termination of online services in April 2024, preventing users from accessing multiplayer and network features. This means players who still own a 3DS cannot access a catalogue of digitally exclusive games once they are removed from their handheld game consoles.
