Nintendo Switch 2 console owners are being devastated with the first wave of system-wide bans that have rendered the console “bricked” and unable to access Nintendo’s online services due to a plethora of reasons.
While the main wave of bans stems from the use of MiG Flash cartridges, one user has interestingly reported a console ban for a slightly offensive username instead.
According to Nintendo support, the bans are irreversible. Users will be unable to access the eShop, system updates, or download and play Game-Key cartridges, turning the Nintendo Switch 2 into an offline-only console.
Nintendo has recently updated its user agreement and community guidelines, giving the company free rein to render services, games, and Nintendo Switch 2 systems inaccessible if users breach their rules.
While most of the bans have been heavily centered on piracy and the use of unauthorized hardware, specifically the MiG flash cartridges, one Reddit user, u/Funaoe24, reported on the r/switch 2 subreddit that their Nintendo Switch 2 console was banned for an obnoxious username.
The Reddit user stated that their Switch 2 console was banned after a family member reportedly changed their profile name to “Twink Link”. Funaoe24 further remarked that they were prevented from accessing any Nintendo services.
Nintendo support issued a response stating permanent console bans cannot be revoked, leaving the owner to return the system to GameStop and recover their account data via cloud.
Unlike Xbox and PlayStation, which target individual accounts, Nintendo is applying bans on Switch 2 devices. This means that affected users can use their accounts on other Nintendo Switch 2 systems, while the banned system is essentially relegated to offline use.
Nintendo of America’s community guidelines prohibit obscene, illegal, or inappropriate usernames, warning users of penalties such as removal of content or suspension of services or permanent bans.
Until this shows any signs of abating, users would benefit from staying clear of using suggestive or inappropriate usernames, as it seems that Nintendo is not taking any chances on policy violations with the Nintendo Switch 2.
