The BioShock franchise has been on a long hiatus. Since the release of The BioShock Collection, comprising remastered versions of all three mainline entries, back in 2016, fans have been clamoring for the next entry into the series. It looks like the wait might soon end as rumors now suggest that 2K Games, the publisher of BioShock, is readying some sort of an announcement regarding the BioShock franchise.
According to information obtained by MP1ST, 2K is preparing to announce something related to the BioShock franchise in the coming months. Rapture, the underwater city that served as the setting for the first BioShock game, is reportedly connected to the purported announcement. Moreover, the rumor also mentions that 2K’s reveal could have “references” to the original BioShock.
Based on this information, it is likely that 2K could announce a remake of the original BioShock. This remake could serve as the harbinger to BioShock 4, a title reportedly in development for several years.
BioShock 4
2K announcing a remake of BioShock 1 lines up nicely with the release of the next BioShock game. This release would not only introduce BioShock to new fans but also rekindle excitement for the new BioShock game in long-time fans of the franchise.
While details around BioShock 4 have been sparse, it is quite likely that we will get to see a new city. BioShock 1 and 2 took us to the underwater city of Rapture, while BioShock Infinite made us tour New Columbia up in the clouds. There have been dubious reports about the next BioShock taking place in a hidden city in the Arctic. But, no concrete or believable leaks have surfaced.
When it comes to the release timeline, 2K’s announcement is rumored to take place before Summer 2025 is over. We have the Xbox Games Showcase 2025 in early June and the Summer Games Fest later. So, we may see something related to BioShock at these events. Following the announcement this summer, the new BioShock game could launch in Fall to take advantage of the Holiday 2025 season.
That said, this is all speculation on our part. Rumors pertaining to upcoming game announcements and release timelines should always be taken with a giant grain of salt. Studios and publishers can change plans at the last minute for a variety of reasons. So, nothing is confirmed about the new BioShock game until we get to hear something official from 2K.
