Microsoft says the Android 11 update for Surface Duo will be released in the next few weeks

Early adopters of Microsoft's first generation foldable smartphone, the Surface Duo, may have started wondering when the promised Android 11 update will finally arrive on their device. This first major OS update was initially scheduled to be released by the end of 2021, but this deadline has passed a few days ago. Microsoft has now released a statement in which the Redmond-based software behemoth commented on the delayed release of the Surface Duo's Android 11 update.

According to a report by WindowsCentral, which refers to "Senior Director of Program Management" Kimmo Lehtosalo as the official source, the aforementioned first major OS update for the Microsoft Surface Duo (from US$623 on Amazon) will be made available for download in the next few weeks. The update is currently in its final validation and certification phase, and the additional development time was supposedly used to ensure a great user experience under Android 11.

After its release in September 2020, the original Surface Duo will now soon be running on Android 11, but from a software perspective it will be a full year behind various Android smartphones like the Google Pixel 6, which are already running on the latest and greatest Android 12. On the other hand, it is quite understandable that a novel device like the foldable Surface Duo needs a few more OS adjustments than traditional smartphones, which is why users of Microsoft's first-generation smartphone will probably be glad to hear that the Android 11 update for their device will be released very soon.
