Qualcomm and MediaTek launched their flagship chipsets for this generation, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 and Dimensity 9500, last week. While only the Qualcomm SoC has been equipped on a released smartphone—the Xiaomi 17 series—both chipsets have been on reference design devices that have been evaluated to see how they compare.
As tested by Xiaobai's Tech Reviews, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 records a single-core score of 3,831 and a multi-core score of 12,459 on Geekbench 6. The Dimensity 9500, in comparison, scores 3,635 and 10,941 on those tests, showing outright inferiority.
On the GPU end, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 scores 8,492 on 3DMark's WildLife Extreme test. The Dimensity 9500 is within touching distance—it scores 8,251 on the same test. Those numbers are identical on GFXBench's 1440P Aztec test, where the Qualcomm chipset runs at 157 FPS versus the MediaTek's 155 FPS. For what it's worth, both chipsets massively outperform Apple A19 Pro on these tests.
Conclusively, it appears Qualcomm has an edge over MediaTek yet again. The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 outperforms the Dimensity 9500 across both CPU and GPU benchmarks, although it must be noted that all tests were carried out on OEM reference design devices.
