Gaming Notebook RoundupSource: Inside HWMSI MegaBook M677 Crystal is already well-known, since it is a model from the special Crystal series. This mobile computer has an extra-fine finish, with the lid in the “piano” style and decorated with Swarovski crystals. This gives it an extremely elegant looks. All 3 MSI models have the same graphics subsystem – nVidia GeForce Go 7600, which guarantees fine performance. As it is a bit more expensive than the L735 model, it is clear that it will only be interesting to the fashion-conscious gamers or female ones.

The MSI Q677 Crystal Edition isn't available at your local Best Buy or Circuit City. MSI laptops are plagued by the same hurdles as ASUS's laptops are: lack of retail presence, direct sales, or Web availability. At least ASUS laptops are beginning to show up in retail channels such as Best Buy. Overall, the Q677 is a formidably equipped media laptop that isn't outrageously priced and deserves some recognition for its aesthetics. However, its middling performance and limited availability are factors that will make consumers flock to the Dells and HPs instead.

If we were to highlight the M677’s one real shortcoming – and for a portable an important one – it would be the machine’s battery life, which at around two and a half hours is distinctly average, especially given that the 7,200mAh battery is a pretty hefty affair. MSI has done a great job of getting a machine onto the market with this spec and performance for so little money, and you won’t be disappointed. If you really want to, you can stump up the cash for Rock’s Pegasus 655, which is marginally better, but you would be £175 worse off as a result.
