The MSI GX720 isn't about to compete with true high-end machines, but as a stylish desktop replacement, it's more than appealing. The only real downside is the keyboard, which detracts from an otherwise highly usable laptop.

If we consider gaming performances, the winner is decided by nuances and better optimization for one or other graphics card. That means, that in some games better frame rate will have GX720 and in some GT735. Processor overclock sounds like great possibility but it results with little improvements in games because bottle neck is actually graphics cards. What model you will choose depends on your budget, but one thing is for sure: you will get very quality notebook with enviably performances as in games as in all other segments.

Since MSI's netbook is called the Wind, I thought that the company might launch a gaming laptop called the Hurricane. Though it's not actually called that, the MSI GX720 ($1,800 street) looks as if it were ready to take the gaming market by storm. There are far better gaming laptops in the market, but the GX720 is priced well below them and has a copious blend of media center features.

The MSI GX720 is a reasonably priced ($1,799) midlevel gaming notebook with some cool features, including one-touch overclocking, power-management switches, and a robust audio system.Although it did a decent job of handling our DX9 gaming tests, however, its DX10 performance was disappointing. With its slick red and brushed-black metal finish, the MSI GX720 has the look that gamers crave, but hard-core enthusiasts may find its 3D performance lacking.

While its Turbo and Eco modes may be a bit overstated, the MSI GX720 is a very solid, value-price gaming notebook. Although it’s undercut by the Gateway P-7811 FX ($350 cheaper and with better graphics scores), the GX720 includes a Blu-ray drive for watching high-definition content—a plus for those who want to indulge in HD movies between gaming sessions.

NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT: Successor of the 8600M GT and because of the smaller 65nm production process the card is higher clocked (and therefore faster) with the same current consumption.Furthermore, it features an improved video processor (VP3) and HybridPower to save current (in conjunction with the 9100M G).

Intel Core 2 Duo: This is the Core Duo and Core Solo successor with a longer pipeline and 5-20% more speed without more power consumption. As an addition to the Core Duo design there exists a fourth decoder, an amplified SSE-unit and an additional arithmetical logical unit (ALU).
The Core 2 Duo for laptops is identical to the desktop Core 2 Duo processors but the notebook-processors work with lower voltages (0.95 to 1188 Volt) and a lower Frontside bus clock (1066 vs 667 MHz). The performance of equally clocked notebooks is 20-25% lower than Desktop PCs because of the lower Frontside bus clock and the slower hard disks.
P8400:
Middle class dual core CPU with a TDP of 25 Watt. For high end gamer the performance could be not sufficient (for class 1 graphic cards).
» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.17.1": Meanwhile the 17 inch display size is a more frequently offered standard format for desktop-replacements. The DTR-laptops can't be carried easily, need much energy but on the other side texts can be read easily and high resolutions are no problem. DTR mainly are intended for stationary usage on desks, where the weight and the energy need are unimportant.

3.4 kg: This laptop is heavy below average, compared with the average of notebooks. Therefore especially desktop replacements fit in this class of weight.
MSI: Micro-Star International (MSI), is a Taiwan based computer hardware manufacturer since 1986 best known for desktop computer motherboards. MSI also designs and manufactures graphics cards, barebone PCs, notebook computers, networking products, servers, multimedia, consumer electronics, and storage devices. MSI, as most Taiwanese computer manufacturers, sells products on OEM/ODM basis. It also sells products worldwide based on its own brand name "MSI". The market share of laptops with the MSI brand is rather low.
80.82%: This rating is to be considered as average, because the amount of notebooks with better ratings is about equal like the amount with worse ratings.
