This Creator 17 is right now the only notebook available with a mini LED display, with 1000+ nits of maximum brightness, HDR 1000 support, and excellent colors and uniformity. It's also a fairly well-rounded product, with a minimalist and lightweight metallic build, alright IO and inputs, latest-generation hardware, and a fair-sized battery. At the same time, though, this is compromised in a couple of ways and expensive, with most of the extra demanded for that mini LED screen.

The latest MSI Creator 17 is a perfect example of a new category of creator notebook that falls between hard core gaming rigs and high-powered workstations. This model is the beefed-up version of the older Creator 15 and, just like its predecessor, it caters to the relatively new category of digital multimedia creators. Overall, this covers a wide range of users from social media influencers to graphic designers, amateur film makers and music producers. In terms of its design, the MSI Creator 17 might feel balanced and solid in hand but there is no getting around the cheap silver plastic finishes on the deck and underside. The pinprick texture pattern above the keyboard adds texture and feature to the otherwise almost featureless plastic deck.

It is worth mentioning that the lattice patterns used for the vents on the sides and the rear, and also on the air intakes on the underside do look good. Despite having a smooth operation, the hinges do look unsophisticated and cheap covered in moulded plastic. On the other hand, the backlit keyboard has conspicuously large labelling using an exceptionally heavy font. While the full-size arrow keys and the number pad are truly appreciated, the way the arrow keys overlap the number keys, might lead to endless mistyping. In addition, the oversized trackpad tends to be aligned with the middle of the combined keyboard/number pad which may result in near constant accidental brushes from both palms and fingers, even with the sensitivity turned down.

As for its performance, this notebook has been incorporated with the Intel Core i7-10875H which is one of the most popular high-power CPUs, prized for its stability. Meanwhile, it is also supported in the creation of visual media by Nvidia's GeForce RTX 2070 Super, the near-top mobile variant of its latest ray tracing RTX graphic chips. This combination paired with a whopping 32 GB of DDR4 RAM, definitely makes up for a formidable power plant for any kind of heavy lifting from HD video editing to multitrack audio mixing. The only truly innovative aspect of this product has to be the ground-breaking screen technology which uses mini-LED screen illumination. Instead of backlighting the panel with a handful of conventional LED bulbs, the True Pixel system from MSI uses 240 mini-LED bulbs for this device. Well, the result is that backlighting is far more even and brighter with nearly 1000:1 contrast and, most important of all, consistently provides close to 100% RGB colour palette. It is worth noting that this wide colour gamut is crucial for the creative arts and the brightness allows for confidently working outdoors in sunlight. In terms of its battery, the MSI Creator 17 carries an 80Whr battery which achieves a battery life of 2 hours and 33 mins on standard settings. This model is definitely a great creative workspace but it does have its own high and low points to be considered.

The MSI Creator 17, according to my reviewing partner Joshua Vergara, is more "folding desktop" than actual laptop. With its 17" 4K display and desktop-class CPU and GPU suite, its spec sheet was custom formulated for creators of all stripes (hence the name). What's more, coming from the Always-Connected PCs and Razer Blades I've recently covered, the MSi Creator 17's price tag is downright reasonable given everything you're getting. But is that raw power with the sacrifices in build quality, audio output and the keyboard (oh, that keyboard)?

Cutting-edge technology is often accompanied by a painful price, and the MSI Creator 17 with Mini LED display is no exception to this rule. The screen is simply a marvel, providing an incredibly bright image with remarkable contrast for content professionals. At a price that approaches $4,000, however, our test configuration is likely beyond the budget of enthusiasts and makes sense only for workstation-class creative pros who seek the best display for their endeavors. Lower-end Creative 17 models are more versatile and affordable, but force you to sacrifice Mini LED bragging rates (though their higher refresh rates would make the MSI better able to pull double duty as a creative machine and gaming rig). As mentioned, Apple is expected to release new MacBook Pro models this fall with an overhaul that could include Mini LED displays, so it might be worth waiting to see the next generation of the 16-inch MacBook Pro before pulling the trigger on the Creator 17.

MSI is especially known as a manufacturer of motherboards and graphics cards for PCs, but also offers computer accessories, complete systems, motherboards, graphics cards, laptops, desktop PCs, monitors and other components. However, the Microstar brand name in Germany belongs to the Medion company. MSI is known for its gaming products and has developed a wide range of gaming laptops and desktop PCs. The company is also active in workstations, servers and industrial automation. MSI has offices in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia.

With these GPUs you are able to play modern and demanding games fluently at medium detail settings and HD resolution.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Super Max-Q: High-End laptop graphics card based on the TU104 chip with 3,072 shaders. Runs at reduced clock speeds compared to a laptop RTX 2080 Super to achieve a much lower power consumption. The TGP is specified between 80 and 90 Watts with different clock speeds.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 Mobile: Mid range to high end laptop graphics card based on the Turing architecture with raytracing features and 1,920 shaders. Compared to the similar named desktop card it offers reduced clock rates.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Max-Q: High-End laptop graphics card based on the TU106 chip with 2,304 shaders and 8 GB GDDR6 VRAM. Offers reduced clock speeds to achieve a much lower power consumption.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Super Max-Q: High-End laptop graphics card based on the TU104 chip with 2,560 shaders. Runs at reduced clock speeds compared to a laptop RTX 2070 Super to achieve a much lower power consumption. The TGP is specified at 80 Watts and therefore significantly lower than the RTX 2070 Super Mobile (115 Watt).

These graphics cards are able to play the latest and most demanding games in high resolutions and full detail settings with enabled Anti-Aliasing.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Laptop GPU: High-End laptop graphics card based on the Ampere GA104 chip. At the time of the launch in early 2021, the 3080 is the fastest laptop graphics card on the market.

Intel Comet Lake:

i7-10875H: On Coffee Lake architecture based processor for big and heavy laptops. Integrates eight processor cores clocked at 2.3 - 5,1 GHz (all 8 cores up to 4.3 GHz) that support HyperThreading. Manufactured in an improved 14nm process (14nm++).

i7-10750H: A high-performance hexa-core processor designed for use in thicker laptops with room for better thermals. The Comet Lake-H processor is manufactured on the third-gen 14 nm Intel process and features a 24 EU UHD Graphics 630 iGPU clocked at 350 MHz to 1,150 MHz. The CPU cores run at 2.6 GHz (base clock speed) Boosting up to 5.0 GHz and the likely all-core Boost frequency is 4.3 GHz. Hyper-Threading is enabled, allowing two threads to run simultaneously on each core.

Intel Tiger Lake:

i7-11800H: Tiger Lake (H45 series) based high end octa-core SoC for gaming laptops and workstations. The eight CPU cores run at 2.3 GHz to 4.6 GHz. The integrated UHD Graphics GPU offers 32 EUs at up to 1.45 GHz. The chip is manufactured on the second-gen 10 nm Intel SuperFin process.
