LG's netbook has the looks, but does it have the brains too? Where many of the netbooks currently on the market opt for mean-looking black and blue shades for their keyboards and cases, this LG X110 mixes up soft shades of white and silver. If you've got no use for Windows but like the other aspects of the machine, consider the mostly-similar Wind.

LG's 10in netbook is in a unique position. Not because it offers anything fundamentally different from other netbooks, but because it's the only mobile PC offering the company has in the UK. So with so much riding on its shoulders, will the X110 measure up? Despite the attractive, sleek styling and excellent keyboard improving on what was already a fairly desirable netbook in its MSI Wind incarnation, LG's X110 falls down by costing as much as other 10in netbooks that offer more battery life.

LG sees itself as a cool fashion brand, producing popular mobile phones under its own name and with Prada branding, some innovative flatpanel monitors and TVs - and in the LG Netbook X110m, a better-than-average netbook. The LG Netbook X110 conforms to most netbook criteria: it's durable but with dainty proportions, has a limited specification list in line with the breed and runs the evergreen Windows XP Home. LG has put together a superior netbook that is more attractive than some, runs faster than most and is eminently usable too. If it weren't for the curiously poor battery performance, we'd have been happy to award the LG Netbook X110 our Recommended badge.

What isn’t conducive to use on the move, however, is the battery life. In fact you’ll only get about 2 hours and 15 minutes from the standard three-cell battery, which is poor performance by any measure. There isn’t a low power mode either to save you from this problem, so you’ll have to look for and buy a six-cell battery, or not stray very far from the mains. But there is also another problem that might irritate mobile workers that comes back to the solid feeling build: the screen is too heavy. This might seem like a small point, but if you sit the X110 down on anything that isn’t a flat desk, with the lid open, it wants to topple backwards.

It's a very cute, almost pocketable addition to the netbook genre and while the 3G modem addition could be useful, it also comes at a price. Even without it however, this is still a very attractive netbook for use on the move, preferably with the back-up of a proper desktop at home or at work, though the shortish battery life won't allow you to stray from the mains for long.

Over 24 months you'll end up splashing out a lot for this ‘free' laptop, so make sure you really need the mobile broadband before going for it. We'd like to see it available priced and SIM-free, though, as it could be a superb little computer for some users.

The X110 is a very good netbook. It's comfortable to use, attractive and has the bonus of integrated 3G. However, it's only available to buy on a 24-month contract, and the fact that it has poor battery life means you won't be able to take full advantage of its wireless capabilities.

After receiving the LG X120, which, as a netbook, is delightful to look at, I couldn't help but stroll into my local RadioShack before reviewing the product. You see, Radio Shack the only place where the X120 is available, and interestingly enough this is the first LG netbook, or any laptop for that matter, to ever debut in the United States. The X120 is LG?s first netbook attempt in the United States, and it has embedded 3G—provided you commit to a 2-year, $60/month contract.

LG: LG Electronics is the world's second-biggest maker of televisions and third-biggest maker of mobile phones. With its headquarters in South Korea, the company has 75 subsidiaries worldwide that design and manufacture televisions, home appliances, and telecommunications devices. LG is an international laptop manufacturer of medium size with few reviews.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 950: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 is an integrated (onboard) graphic chip on Mobile Intel 945GM chipset. It is a faster clocked version of the GMA 900 and supports no hardware T&L (Transform & Lightning) accelleration (which is required for some games).

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) HD Graphics: Onboard graphics card that is built in the new Arrandale CPUs (Core i3 / i5 / i7 Dual Cores). Depending on the model and Turbo Boost, the GMA HD is clocked between 166 and 766 MHz.

» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.

Intel Atom: The Intel Atom series is a 64-Bit (not every model supports 64bit) microprocessor for cheap and small notebooks (so called netbooks), MIDs, or UMPCs. The speciality of the new architecture is the "in order" execution (instead of the usual and faster "out of order" execution). Therefore, the transistor count of the Atom series is much lower and, thus, cheaper to produce. Furthermore, the power consumption is very low. The performance per Megahertz is therfore worse than the old Pentium 3M (1,2 GHz on par with a 1.6 GHz Atom).

N270:

Power efficient, cheap and slow Netbook single core CPU. Because of the in-order execution, the performance per MHz is worse than Core Solo or Celeron M processors.

Intel Core i5:

470UM:

The Core i5-430UM is a power efficient ultra low voltage processor for laptops. Using Turbo Boost it can be clocked with up to 1.83 GHz. Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. AES, VT-d and Trusted Execution are deactivated for the 430UM. An integrated graphics card (Intel HD Graphics with 166-500 MHz) and a DDR3-800 memory controller are also included in the package.

10.2: The netbook/subnotebook has a quite small display format. Nonetheless, it is a common format for netbooks. The advantage is, that the subnotebook/netbook can be small dimensioned and can be carried easily. Further the small display has the advantage, that it needs few energy, which improves the battery runtime and in consequence the mobility. The disadvantage is that the reading of texts is a bit exhausting for the eyes. It is difficult to use high resolutions.

10.4: The netbook/subnotebook has a quite small display format.

» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.

1.2 kg:

This subnotebook is one of the most lightweight of all notebooks and can be carried very easily. There exist hardly any models in this extreme class of weight. 7-9 inch displays are normal for this class of weight.

1.3 kg:

This subnotebook is one of the most lightweight of all notebooks and can be carried very easily. There exist only few sub-notebooks, which weight less. 10 inch displays are normal for this class of weight.

73.65%: This rating is bad. Most notebooks are better rated. This is not a recommendation for purchase.
