Just a few days after Hollow Knight: Silksong’s long-awaited release on September 4, 2025, the modding community has already sprung into action, addressing the indie sequel’s most vexing feature, double-damage, which has caused outrage among some casual players.
Team Cherry is back in action with its hand-crafted Metroidvania title with some intricate precision-based gameplay, but the problem with the game is its punishing early-game difficulty, with enemies capable of dealing double-damage from the get-go.
While the game’s file size on PC comes in at 8 GB, modders have quickly tinkered with the game’s settings to ease up the Hollow Knight: Silksong’s difficulty. The first wave of mods on Nexus Mods deal with the steep difficulty curve, ensuring that new and veteran Hollow Knight players ease into Hornet’s journey through Pharloom.
The “No Double Damage” mod created by Baiker hit Nexus Mods on September 5, just 24 hours after the game’s release, and it solves the problem players have been complaining about.
Many enemies and bosses in the game are capable of dealing two masks' worth of damage per hit, which makes the game particularly brutal when you’re just starting and health upgrades are few and far between. According to Baiker’s notes, “This mod modifies damage taken from enemies to be one mask. Hazards may still do two hit damage.”
To install this mod, you need to first download the BepInEx framework version 5.4.23.3. After running the game once and exiting to your desktop, the BepInEx folder will show a plugins folder.
Afterward, players have to simply download the mod DLL file and extract it into the plugins folder in the Hollow Knight: Silksong install directory. Still, players find the game a bit too punishing, with some suggesting that environmental damage should be toned down to just 1 chip of health.
Furthermore, gamers still need to equip a Compass, similar to the original Hollow Knight, which takes up space in a valuable tool slot. Modder Synthlight also released a fix allowing players to “Always Have Compass” and “Always Have Magnet” around the same time period, allowing players to permanently have these features without sacrificing inventory slots for tools like the Magnetite brooch.
