Star Overdrive, an unconventional sci-fi adventure, launched on Steam on June 19 and was met with a perfect user rating. While there were only 12 reviews at the time of writing, they point to a game that’s well worth checking out.
Developed by indie studio Caracal Games and published by Dear Villagers, Star Overdrive first launched on April 10 for Nintendo Switch (available on Amazon for $350), with the PC version arriving about two months later. Normally priced at $34.99, the game is currently available for $27.99 thanks to a 20% launch discount running until July 3. A free demo is also available and has already been well received, earning 90% positive reviews from 133 players.
A hoverboard adventure set to music
In Star Overdrive, you play as Bios, a stranded traveler on the alien world of Cebete. Equipped with a futuristic hoverboard and a mystical keytar – a guitar-like instrument – you explore three open biomes, solve puzzles, perform acrobatic stunts and fight using musical abilities. Your mission: trace an old distress signal and search for your lost love, Nous.
The gameplay blends high-speed movement, physics-driven challenges, tactical combat and moments of quiet exploration. A highlight is the smooth hoverboard handling, which Steam users describe as especially fluid with a controller. Combat and puzzles feature a rhythm-based twist, using the keytar to interact with the world in ways that are both visually and musically integrated.
Star Overdrive has earned strong praise so far but remains under the radar with low player numbers. According to SteamDB, its current peak sits at just 41 players. Given the 100% positive reviews, though, it’s fair to call this indie title a true hidden gem. Whether it will gain wider attention on Steam remains to be seen.
