Gigabyte P37X

The Gigabyte P37X prides on being the thinnest and lightest 17.3 inch gaming laptop at the time of this article. Design is kept simple and clean despite the gaming machine tag with the entire chassis finished in matte black. At the first glance, the Gigabyte P37X looks more like an everyday workstation and even though it could serve that purpose, it is catered to hardcore gamers. The Windows 8.1 device comes with a 4th Generation Intel Core i7-4720HQ quad-core processor clocked at 2.6 GHz, a maximum of 16 GB of DDR3L 1600Hz RAM, a powerful NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M GPU with 8 GB GDDR5 VRAM and various storage options ranging from a combination of HDDs to SSDs. Display on the Gigabyte P37X is a 17.3 inch Full HD IPS LCD panel with good colors and brightness. On-board is a full-sized backlit keyboard with individual macro keys and comfortable touchpad. What Gigabyte is offering here is an uber-thin portable gaming device, but this compactness comes at the price of excessive overheating, leading to lots of whirring fans and a noise like a hairdryer. The laptop performs excellently and can deal with any game, but this is not enough to overcome slight flaws in design.

If you're after a slick, thin, large and powerful gaming laptop that's not too over the top in the looks department, Gigabyte's P37X is the machine for you, even though it's pretty pricey and chomps through battery life faster than you'll be able to finish your games. Still, with plenty of firepower, you'll be conquering your favourite games as long as there's a power plug handy.

The Gigabyte P37X promises a system that can play demanding PC games on the go, and mostly delivers. While I was reviewing the P37X, I had to grapple with a lot of small irritants: an off-center keyboard, unimpressive speakers, a monitor that should have been colorful and a noisy fan. However, this system delivers excellent frame rates and performance, and ultimately, these are more important factors.

Overall, if you're willing to make the sacrifices in portability that using a 17-inch laptop entails, there's a whole lot to like about the P37X. The screen is superb for gaming and multimedia editing alike, and its size makes all of those tasks more enjoyable. The keyboard is comfortable, the processor and GPU can handle the most demanding apps and games, and the battery life is better than it should be for a gaming laptop.

The P37X is simultaneously massive yet tiny. In terms of the length and width, it’s a whopper thanks to the large 17.3 inch display, yet it measures a tiny 22.5mm deep. Most gaming laptops with a screen of this size tip the scales well in excess of three or four kilograms, but Gigabyte has trimmed the fat to lower the weight to just 2.7kg (add another hundred grams if you included the optical drive). This makes it surprisingly portable for such a behemoth, proving that road warriors needn’t totally compromise mobility for performance.

The P37X is Gigabyte's most ambitious gaming laptop to date. Cramming a quad-core Intel processor and Nvidia's fastest mobile GPU into a chassis that's less than 23mm thick is no small feat, yet Gigabyte has still found room for 16GB of memory, two SSDs, a hard disk and an optical drive. An impressive array of hardware for a thin gaming laptop, but inevitable compromises have been made.

Starting with the build quality of the P37X we have a system which immediately feels well built as we unbox it. The metal chassis feels solid and we like the minimal branding and curved edges. The parts used by Gigabyte for the key components are all from quality brands and little touches like adding in an ambient light sensor for the keyboard LEDs help elevate this aspect to a higher level.

Without the kind of powerful, high-end components that come with a high-end gaming laptop like the P37X, you won't be able to play at full resolution or enjoy most up-to-date gaming titles with a constant 60 fps frame rate. It's these high-end components that quickly suck a laptop battery dry, plus they output considerable heat that requires heavy-duty cooling, not to mention driving up the cost.

Gigabyte's P37W v4 is one of the fastest laptops we've had the pleasure of using, and its battery life isn't as bad as we were expecting from a gaming laptop. It is ridiculously expensive though at around £1,450, and the keyboard and trackould be a whole lot better. Still, in its class of 17.3-inch laptops, it's one of the best.

It carries on Gigabyte’s good run of gaming-focussed laptops, with battery life being particularly impressive, and it’s no slouch when it comes to performance either. We marginally prefer the build quality of the Asus G571JT, but you really can’t go wrong with either.

The Gigabyte P37x v4 has a few flaws compared to other gaming notebooks, but the machine’s upsides easily outweigh them. The keyboard’s off center placement is a bit awkward, the fan is noisy and the matte display doesn’t quite offer the same color contrast that we’d like from a gaming device. But that does little to mar P37x’s potent combo of performance and portability that few laptops on the market can match, especially at the $2,200 price tag. If you’re looking for strong performance on the go then the Gigabyte P37x is an excellent option.

This looks familiar… Gigabyte hasn’t wasted any time reworking their P35X, now suffixed with “v5” so as to indicate that this is merely an iterative update. Given that, can the conservative revisions to the $2,300 P35X v5 preserve its relevance in the gaming market?

The P35Xv5 scored 80% in the sRGB test, which means colours are reasonably accurate. It’s by no means a professionally calibrated display, so if you’re a photo or video editor who requires colour accuracy then you might want to give this one a miss – but it’s definitely good enough for most uses. Overall I’m impressed by the display quality. Watching movies, playing games and browsing the web all look great on the P35Xv5.

Probably not. The design of the P35Xv5 is both it’s selling point and Achilles heel. Yes, it’s relatively thin and light, but looks-wise it's dull, it's poorly made – and if you’d just spent £1,600 on a new notebook then I can guarantee that you'd be disappointed on seeing the P35Xv5 for the first time. However, beneath all the cheap plastic is a solid gaming notebook with an excellent screen. Opting for the top-end 980M alongside the Skylake i7 and 16GB DDR4 RAM provides great performance, and you’ll have no trouble maintaining 60fps in modern games at Full HD.

70% Oodles of gaming power and battery life in a portable package
Source: Tech Advisor English Archive.org version
As Intel’s CPUs let even gaming beasts like the Gigabyte P35X v5 creep into battery life territory that almost makes them viable as roving productivity machines, every big of extra portability becomes more valuable. Sure enough, this is one of the most portable machines to feature a GTX 980M graphics card. The problem is that if being able to lug the Gigabyte P35X V5 around conveniently isn’t a major concern, this wouldn't be our top pick. Performance is great, the screen is fine and there are plenty of connections. But fairly noisy fans and better touchpad/keyboard combos available from Alienware and Asus make it drop down our most-wanted list a little way. Still, if portability and sober looks appeal, it deserves a place on your shortlist.

Decked out in black with occasional orange highlights, the Gigabyte P55’s top cover features a silver Gigabyte logo. While better known for its range of motherboards, Gigabyte does have some other strings to its bow. The company also manufactures desktop systems, tablets and the subject of this next review, a gaming laptop. This is the Gigabyte P55 product.

Gigabyte P57W-CF1

The Gigabyte P57W-CF1 is a large 17.3 inch gaming notebook featuring an Intel "Skylake" Core i7 quad processor, which was launched September 2015. In addition to four CPU cores with Hyper-Threading clocked at 2.6 - 3.5 GHz, the chip also integrates an HD Graphics 530 GPU and a dual-channel DDR4-2133/DDR3L-1600 memory controller. The P57W-CF1 is equipped an Nvidia GeForce GTX 970M graphics adapter, which is the second fastest high-end graphics card based on the Maxwell GM204 chip from the GeForce GTX 900M series. These graphics cards are able to play the latest and most demanding games in high resolutions and full detail settings with enabled anti-aliasing. In terms of connectivity, the left side of the P57W-CF1 houses a lock slot, an Ethernet port, two USB 3.0 ports, an SD card reader, and separate microphone and headphone jacks. The rest of the ports are on the right side: a USB 3.0 port, a USB 3.1 Type C port, an HDMI 2.0 port, a mini-DisplayPort, a legacy VGA port and the power-in. Only the two fan exhausts occupy the back. On the front, the P57W has a hot-swap bay. The display has a Full HD resolution (1920 x 1080 pixels), which is ideal for a gaming notebook. Its anti-glare (matte) coating is helpful in situations where there is ambient or CCFL overhead lighting, since it eliminates glare. Color saturation and contrast are high for gaming, multimedia, and general usage. The viewing angles are 178 degrees, which means that you don't have to worry about a distorted picture if you look at the display from an off-angle. Storage for this model is split into a smaller 256 GB M.2 SSD for the operating system and a secondary 1 TB 7200 RPM Hitachi hard drive for storage. With this kind of setup, you can install programs on the SSD, and map documents, pictures, and other media to the hard drive. This is a best-of-both-worlds approach to storage. The storage can be further expanded using the hot-swap bay. Using the included storage drive adapter, another 2.5-inch storage drive can be fitted in.

While I might bemoan the P57W's utter lack of style, when it comes to playing games on the go, does it really matter how many flashing lights are on your laptop? Because at $1,600, the Gigabyte's P57W is the kitchen sink of midrange gaming machines. You get pretty solid overall performance, a plethora of ports, a great matte display and really good battery life for a 17-inch gaming machine.

The P57W’s sub-one inch thin chassis is impressive, as is its 6.4 pound carry weight. Its all plastic build probably helped keep the weight in check. That’s actually one of our complaints; we’d like to see some use of aluminum, or at least rubberized surfaces at this price point. As it stands, the look and feel of this notebook is borderline generic. It furthermore lacks a customizable LED lighting system, as is offered on some competing gaming notebooks from Asus and Alienware. The keyboard is another area where the P57W could use improvement. There’s just not enough feel, though it does have a good layout, and is comfortable for long typing sessions. Last on our list of complains is the display’s lack of Nvidia G-Sync support, which is starting to become a more popular feature on gaming notebooks.

There's a lot of competition in this space—17-inch gaming laptops—these days, and $1,699 is no impulse buy for a laptop, not by a long shot. So why should this Gigabyte model claim your money, versus other gaming-focused models in the mid-$1,000s zone?

It might be time to reconsider a gaming laptop, as the latest crop manage to dispel the common belief that such machines are loud, bulky affairs that offer a level of refinement akin to Donald Trump. Proving that gaming laptops have mellowed, Gigabyte's P57W offers a good amount of punch in a sleek, understated chassis that's reasonably slim and able to keep cool without intolerable levels of noise.

The P35W V5 tries to deliver a mobile 4K gaming experience, but its lesser price and components mean it doesn't quite manage. It's decent in most other departments, but rivals offer more balanced specifications inside better-looking machines – sometimes for far more cash, but sometimes only for £50 (around $66/AUS$87) more. The P35W v5 is a reasonable laptop, but it doesn't do enough to stand out.

Gigabyte P55W v6

The Gigabyte P55W v6 is a mid-range VR-ready gaming laptop equipped with decent hardware specification. It features a 6th generation Intel Core i7-6700HQ CPU, 8 GB DDR4 RAM, an integrated Intel HD Graphics 530 GPU and an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 GDDR5 6 GB with support of Nvidia's Optimus Technology. The RAM of the laptop is upgradable to a maximum of 32 GB as is the case in many gaming laptops these days. As for storage, the Gigabyte P55W v6 supports dual storage system. It features a 2.5-inch hard disk drive slot and an M.2 Type 2280 SSD slot. Storage supplied for the laptop is a 256 GB SSD and a 1000 GB HDD with 7200 rpm. The hybrid hard drive storage system ensures both faster boot up from the SSD and large storage size from the conventional hard disk drive. The display of the laptop is an anti-glare 15.6" Full HD IPS LCD with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. With its anti-glare coating, it is very much usable in bright conditions, but doesn't give the 3D like image that a glass coating will provide. The quality matte black finish of the laptop looks solid and simple. It is a little different from the usual gaming laptops featuring bold designs. The Gigabyte P55W v6 is equipped with a full-sized backlit keyboard, which creates comfortable and responsive typing experience for long hour usage. It features a 2.2 mm key travel, which makes typing very effortless. The battery of the Gigabyte P55W v6 is a Li-ion 6-cell battery with a capacity of 5400mAh. It also features a fan tweak function to adjust the fan speed of quiet, normal or gaming mode. This is a good feature to balance between system stability and needs for tranquillity while gaming. There are two speakers with two watts built into the laptop for audio output. To deliver even better audio experience, Dolby Digital Plus delivers surround sound with their surround virtualizer. The Gigabyte P55W v6 measures at 379.71 x 269.38 x 26.8~34 mm and weighs at around 2.6 kg. It features a Super Multi DVD-RW drive, which is an extra feature these days as many laptops do not include any kind of optical drive. As for connectivity, it supports WiFi 802.11ac (a/b/g/n compatible), Bluetooth v4.1 and 10/100/1000Mbps Ethernet LAN. The input and output ports include USB, HDMI and Ethernet. The Gigabyte P55W v6 certainly is a good gaming laptop made in anticipation for the upcoming VR gaming technology. Hands-on article by Jagadisa Rajarathnam

The biggest knock you could levy against the Gigabyte P55W v6 is that it’s relatively weak against its peers. But that’s comparing the laptop against some of the most powerful mobile devices on the market. As can be seen from the benchmark scores and strong in-game testing the P55W v6 is still a very powerful machine, capable of running most apps with ease.

By this notebook adopting understated aesthetics, those who prefer a simplistic and discreet theme will favour the design which has been implemented. It’s quite unusual to see a gaming notebook lack an aggressive, bulky approach and also see an absence of flashy LEDs. Although the design does look classy, the construction of P55W V6 bears lots of plastic – including the lid. We’d like to have seen some brushed metal being used on such a product.

As far as thin and light gaming notebooks go, the Gigabyte P35X v6 is a solid package. Visually, it isn’t a whole lot to look at, but that’s part of the draw for this line: It doesn’t scream “gamer.” Its build quality is quite solid, as is the overall level of quality. If you can live without external bells and whistles, if you crave a 4K display, and if you like the idea of above-average portability and battery life, it's a fine way to go. But if raw performance is more your thing, and you want to save money and get a snazzier design as part of the bargain, the MSI GT62VR Dominator Pro-005 earns its Editors' Choice status, and also gives you more memory (if less storage) while costing $500 less. Gigabyte: Gigabyte Technology is a Taiwanese computer hardware manufacturer founded in 1986, best known for its motherboards and graphics cards. Gigabyte offers a wide range of products including motherboards, graphics cards, laptops, monitors, systems and components. Gigabyte's laptops offer gaming and creative features on the go. Gigabyte monitors offer 4K Pro Gaming.

Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M:

Fast high-end graphics card based on the Maxwell GM204 chip from the GeForce GTX 900M series.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M:

Second fastest high-end graphics card based on the Maxwell GM204 chip from the GeForce GTX 900M series.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 965M: Lower high-end graphics card based on the Maxwell chip GM204 and GM206 (newer 2016 version with higher clock rates). Part of the GeForce GTX 900M series.

With these GPUs you are able to play modern and demanding games fluently at medium detail settings and HD resolution.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 Mobile: The mobile GTX 1060 is based on the GP106 chip and offer 1280 shaders. Compared to the identically named desktop version it features a slightly lower clock rate. Games in Full HD and maximum details should run fluently on the card.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Mobile: Pascal based high-end mobile graphics card based on a cut down GP104 (like the GTX 1080) and GDDR5 graphics memory. Successor to the GTX 980M with a 10 Watts higher TDP. Similar to the desktop GTX 1070 performance wise, but with more shaders and lower clock speeds.

» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.

4720HQ: Haswell-based quad-core processor clocked at 2.6 GHz with Turbo Boost support up to 3.6 GHz. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 4600 GPU and a dual channel DDR3 memory controller.

5700HQ: Broadwell-based quad-core processor for notebooks. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 5600 GPU and is manufactured in 14 nm.

6700HQ: Skylake-based quad-core processor for notebooks. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 530 GPU and is manufactured in 14 nm.

» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.

» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.

2.3 kg:

2.95 kg:

With this weight, a laptop is rather heavier than average. Devices in this range shine more with screen size and performance than with mobility.

75.71%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
