Garmin has just announced various improvements for its Fenix range of models. A new activity is now supported for custom workouts, headphones can be used while taking an electrocardiogram, and the map display has also been redesigned.

Garmin is currently distributing a new software version for various smartwatches, namely the Fenix 8 model generation, including the Fenix 8 AMOLED, the Enduro 3, Fenix E and Quatix 8. Software version 20.12 is still in the beta stage, so it is only being distributed to participants in the beta program. Those interested must explicitly request it via the OTA function on the watch itself. As this is a beta update, the diving functions are disabled and carrying out electrocardiograms is not possible.

Nevertheless, the beta update is intended to fix a bug related to the ECG function; specifically, Bluetooth headphones should no longer lose connection when performing an electrocardiogram. The relatively short changelog also includes an entry relating to user-defined workouts. Inline skating is now supported, and a user-defined workout allows you to define your own activity goals.

The remaining entries describe bug fixes, mostly to do with the navigation function. For example, a bug with the paid Outdoor Maps Plus feature has been fixed. A specific type of workout previously resulted in incorrect rep counts. This automatic rep count is, of course, primarily relevant for strength athletes. Users of a Tactix smartwatch will now benefit from a properly functioning link to the weather radar.
