11 Bit Studios' post-apocalyptic frozen city-building survival sequel, Frostpunk 2, is scheduled to launch on Xbox Series S|X and PlayStation 5 on September 18, 2025. The release was announced in a now-private YouTube trailer that slipped out accidentally.
Fortunately, the accidental leak, which was quickly removed from YouTube, has been preserved via third-party uploads on social media. The slip-up has players hyped, as Frostpunk 2 will launch on Xbox Game Pass on day one.
Pre-orders for the Xbox Series version include an Icebreaker Edition, which includes a physical copy of Frostpunk 2, Artbook and Novella Download Code, and a diorama of New London. The Whiteout Edition will consist of a shadowbox, stickers, two New London Postcards, and one of two embroidered patches.
The game was exceptionally well-received when it initially launched on PC on September 20, 2024. The game received an 85/100 on Metacritic and a 97% critic score on OpenCritic. Moreover, user reviews on PC highlight the game’s monumental success. According to SteamDB, the game had a peak all-time player count of 37,509, with 17,129 reviews, of which 75% were positive.
By December 2024, Frostpunk 2 sold 592,000 copies, generating $18.5 million and recouping development costs within just three days of launch.
Frostpunk 2 is set 30 years after the first game’s premise, where players take on the role of the Steward of New London in 1916, where they erect a petroleum-driven society during a volcanic winter. The game introduces morally dubious decision-making, faction politics, and new mechanics, including Law Proposals, adding to the game’s in-depth political system.
Xbox and PlayStation gamers will enjoy the same gripping experience, along with free content updates and two upcoming DLCs, Aurora and Spectrum, which are scheduled for late 2025, alongside a third unannounced DLC, slated for 2026. Digital Deluxe Editions of Frostpunk 2 will include all 3 upcoming DLCS.
Moreover, 11 Bit Studio’s roadmap also teased Frostpunk 1886, a 2027 remake of the original title on Unreal Engine 5.
While the early trailer reveal is a mistake on 11 Bit Studios' part, it’s only served to build hype for the upcoming console release. Console gamers are eagerly awaiting Frostpunk 2’s launch on respective platforms amid the trailer hiccup. Mark your calendars for September because New London is waiting.
