The latest entry in the EVE universe launched its Closed Alpha test on February 14. The test phase runs until February 24, giving players a chance to experience EVE Frontier for the first time.

With over 20 years in the MMO market, EVE Online is one of the genre’s longest-running titles. Now, CCP Games aims to expand its sci-fi universe with EVE Frontier, a spin-off announced in September 2024. Unlike its predecessor, this new entry emphasizes a darker open-world experience, increased player interaction and survival mechanics.

In EVE Frontier, players awaken as "Remnants" in a devastated space sector, where they must explore their surroundings, gather resources and fight for survival. Beyond rival players, a hostile AI lurks in the darkness, adding to the danger. CCP Games sums up the experience with the tagline: "No safety. No certainties. Awake, explore, endure." The test phase runs until February 24 and those interested can sign up for free on the game's official website.

Mixed reactions from the community

Early feedback from testers on Reddit is mixed. While some praise the game’s atmosphere and concept, others have voiced concerns. A major point of criticism is the absence of high-sec areas – safe zones from EVE Online that protect players from attacks. Since all progress in EVE Frontier is lost upon death, many fear the game could become a frustrating experience.

With an impressive 120,000 systems, EVE Frontier offers a vast universe – but that scale could also be a drawback. Critics worry that players may be too spread out, leading to limited interaction and an empty world. However, CCP Games has promised to involve the community in development, raising hopes that unpopular mechanics will be adjusted based on player feedback.
