The WLED screen looks good with a native resolution of 1366 x 768, which is a little higher than 720P HD (1280 x 720). While the screen is nice on the eyes, what really stands out are the speakers and how nice they’re on the ears. Using JBL speakers, the XPS 14 offers some serious sound quality; much higher than you’ll see from most other notebooks, especially ones in this size.

Dell had originally launched the XPS lineup of laptops as Xtreme Performance Systems, targeted specifically at enthusiast gamers and users who needed a portable graphics powerhouse. The Dell XPS 14 is one of the finest gaming machines available today. It has a very stylish design and comes with some of the best laptop hardware available. I would definitely recommend it.

When Dell told us of its plans to revive its tried and true XPS laptop line we were pretty darn excited. Without a doubt, the Dell XPS 14 packs some extremely attractive features: the system's JBL speakers are some of the best ever put into a laptop, its Core i5 processor combined with NVIDIA GeForce GT400M provides seriously solid gaming and performance muscle, and its HD webcam captures crisp video and pictures.

We're particularly impressed with the look and feel of the XPS 14, at least when you open it up. While the lid is rather bland, the inside is anything but. While it's not going to replace your desktop, the Dell XPS 14 is a wonderful alternative to the spate of underpowered netbooks. Put simply, the XPS looks stunning and packs a respectable performance punch in a highly portable package.

In this market for the money our personal must haves made this a bargain compared to other systems. The Toshiba at nearly the same price looked dated and had less features. I can recommend this system based in initial impressions.

Golden mean. The new XPS 14 Ultrabook was presented to the press during the Dell Technology Camp 2012. An ultrabook of the upper class that is available from 1149 Euro (RRP, ~1410 USD).
Dell XPS 14 Ultrabook Review - 2012 Version
Source: Legit Reviews English Archive.org version
Ultimately the Dell XPS14 is a rock solid system and didn't disappoint today. If you're looking to invest into an ultrabook, the XPS14 would be a great one to get your hands on. The Standard 1 year is included, the first level of the three year is $199, the Dell recommended is $219, and the best which includes Accidental Damage Service is $349. Depending on how long you plan on keeping the XPS14 and how easy or hard you are on, you may want to invest in the 'Best' just in case you accidentally throw it across the parking lot.

Dell's XPS 14 tries to offer a potentially more feature rich ultrabook but comes up short due to its overall size and pricing. It certainly is heavier and taller than most other 14-inch ultrabooks. It makes up for this by having better than average battery life and a screen with a higher resolution than most its competition.

Despite being quite lovely to look at, and even lovelier in the flesh, Dell’s XPS 14 has some serious issues to contend with. At this price, we’d have hoped for a far superior display, and it’s clear that cramming a dedicated graphics chipset into such an attractive, slimline chassis isn’t as easy as it looks. There’s a huge amount of promise, but alas this power-packed Ultrabook just doesn’t make the grade.

The Dell XPS 14 Ultrabook brings a simplistic metal style that will be instantly familiar to anyone who's spent much time with an Apple MacBook. 70% Dell XPS 14 review – if the average ultrabook is not enough for you

All in all, the Dell XPS 14 is an interesting laptop. Like most XPSs, build quality and aesthetics are some of its greatest assets, next to the comfortable keyboard and trackpad. And the battery life is something that sets this particular unit apart from most of the competitors. But then again, so does the price and the screen is for sure something Dell should have taken better care of, as it’s just not good enough for a laptop in this price range.

Dell's XPS 14 features an Ivy Bridge processor and discrete graphics, which make it quite powerful for its form factor. It's a decent Ultrabook overall, but not without its problems. It could use a screen with better vertical viewing angles and a USB port on the right side wouldn't hurt either. Consider it if you want a relatively mobile laptop with good overall performance and battery life, and business features such as TPM and Gigabit Ethernet.

It was difficult to get an accurate impression of the laptop’s audio talents, but we can say that in every other regard the XPS 14 makes a worthy larger sibling to the XPS 13, correcting some of its flaws like limited connectivity and average screen resolution. Dell XPS 14 review: a 14-inch Ultrabook with Ivy Bridge and graphics might
Source: Engadget English Archive.org version
It's easy to see the XPS 14 as just a slightly larger version of the 13 that came so recently before, but that's far from telling the full story. Yes, this looks an awful lot like that one, but it's considerably heavier, considerably faster and has a considerably better trackpad. It is, therefore, a considerably better laptop -- if you don't mind that extra heft -- but it's far from perfect.

What good is an Ultrabook if you have to take the charger with you? Dell's approach with its new XPS 14z (starting at $1,099) is to pack a beefier battery than the competition does in exchange for a chunkier (albeit striking) design. The Dell XPS 14 is one of the longest lasting Ultrabooks yet and features Nvidia graphics, but the relatively heavy weight and high price give us pause.

80% Dell XPS 14 review

The Dell XPS 14 is a worthy MacBook Pro rival with its beautifully minimalist yet incredibly solid aluminium chassis and stylish lines, and the soft-touch keyboard surround and grippy rubber base elevate it a step above. The range of available specs is equally impressive for the price and battery life is top of its game, though at just over 2kg you’d expect no less. The only real fly in the Ultrabook ointment is the admittedly high-resolution TN screen, which suffers from the usual poor viewing angles. If you can live with this and don’t need touch for Windows 8, the Dell XPS 14 makes for a good if somewhat weighty choice.

Dell: Dell is a U.S. manufacturer (based in Texas) of computer hardware founded in 1984 and is one of the largest international manufacturers in terms of both market share and notebook models. Its product line includes desktops, notebooks, storage systems, monitors, servers, printers, consumer electronics and peripherals. Dell offers laptops that are suitable for various applications, such as business laptops, gaming laptops, ultra portables and workstations. Dell's business laptops from the Latitude and Precision series are an option for professional users and businesses.

In 2023, Dell had an approximate 17% market share of global PC sales, ranking #3 after Lenovo and HP.

For gaming enthusiasts, Dell's Alienware brand is for gaming notebooks.

Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.

NVIDIA GeForce GT 420M: The GT 420M is an GF108 based middle class GPU with DirectX 11 support.

NVIDIA GeForce GT 425M: Successor of the GeForce GT 335M featuring DirectX 11 support and based on the GF108 chip.

Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

NVIDIA GeForce GT 630M:

Multiple models based on various chips of the Fermi generation. Specifically, the GT 630M exists in GF108/GF106/GF116 variants, but are all essentially renamed GeForce GT 540M or 555M GPUs. A 28nm GF117 variant exists as well with reduced power consumption.

Intel Core i5:

460M: The Core i5-460M has only 3 MB L3 Cache (compared to the I7-620M) and clocks between 2.53-2.8 GHz (Turbo Mode). Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.

3317U: Ivy-Bridge-based ULV-CPU in Q2 2012. Offers a core clock of 1.7 - 2.6 GHz and an HD 4000 GPU (350 - 1050 MHz). The TDP is rated at 17 W.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.

740QM:

The Core i7-740QM is a high-end quad-core CPU for laptops (in 2010) with a relative small base clock rate and a high Turbo Boost max frequency of 2.93 GHz (for one core). Therefore, it combines the advantages of a slow clocked quad core CPU with a fast single core one. Compared to the faster Core i7 mobile CPUs, the 740QM only features 6MB L3 Cache.

3517U: Fast Ivy-Bridge-based ULV-CPU in Q2 2012. Offers a core clock of 1.9 - 3.0 GHz and an HD 4000 GPU (350 - 1150 MHz). The TDP is rated at 17 W.

14.00:

14 inch display size represents a middle ground between the small subnotebook formats and the screens of the standard 15 inch laptops.

The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, provides good resolutions with usable detail sizes, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact.

In the past, 14-inch devices were very rare, but now they are the standard for laptops after the 15-inchers.

74.05%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
