The Dell Latitude XT isn't going to replace your current notebook as it lacks real power. However, if you have specific need for a Tablet PC, this is one of the most cost-effective and easy to use devices we've used for some time, making it a highly recommended choice.

As a platform, the Tablet PC has never reached the mass market acceptance that Microsoft expected. However, as a business tool it has seen steady and continued growth. So much so that Dell has finally launched its first device into the market with the Latitude XT (£1409 inc. VAT). It's an impressive machine, weighing a mere 1.6kg and is finished in black aluminium, giving it a tactile feel but also a robust quality to the design.

This is a handsome and very usable Tablet PC, thanks to its excellent screen and keyboard. Battery life and performance are both a little disappointing, though, and the price becomes steep as you add in the options.

The Dell Latitude XT Tablet PC is an excellent all around Tablet PC with an exceptional screen and well thought out features. The Latitude XT has the power to get things done and the simple clean lines of the black case make it un obtrusive. Also worth noting is that lack of "gloss" on this machine makes means your not disturbed by unwanted reflections. If you are in a position to order a Dell Latitude XT "Road Warrior Solution" configuration you wont be sorry or disappointed in your investment.

The Latitude XT from Dell is a lightweight system that will appeal to users running pen-driven applications, especially with its support for touch input as well as the stylus. The built-in 3G modem is also a bonus for travelling workers. However, the system looks costly compared with other Tablet devices, unless buyers can obtain a discount.

Its price and relatively weak battery life count against the Dell Latitude XT when compared to normal ultra-portable notebooks. However, if it's a Tablet PC you must have then its superbly accurate and clear screen make a persuasive argument, provided you can justify the expense.

The Dell Latitude XT’s unique capacitive touchscreen puts it at the head of the class in terms of tablet functionality. But is it worth the three-grand premium? Yes, but only if you pick up the nine-cell battery and you don’t mind the extra bulk it adds.

Tablet PCs never captured the attentions of PC owners in the way that Microsoft might have liked. But while most of the big manufacturers have dipped their toes into the murky waters, and with varying levels of success, one has been notable by its absence: Dell. The newest addition to Dell's Latitude range is an expensive, but highly accomplished Tablet PC.

The Latitude XT is a solid tablet with a great display. It is very expensive though. Many users complained about the price and Dell says it is targeted toward the business market not consumers. This may be true, but it still seems a bit pricey for the business market as well. The XT can compete with Toshiba's M700 or even Lenovo's X61. Yes, the N-trig, dual touch technology is a huge plus and taking notes and using your finger are almost flawless, but the price is way above its competitors. The XT comes with a nice array of ports and has plenty of optional accessories. The slice battery gives it all day power and the MediaBase gives you an optical drive and more ports then I could ever use. It seems Dell is already talking about updating the XT by November 2008 as well, so I guess we will see what the XT2 has to offer.

If you are looking for a Tablet PC that can also be used as a standard laptop PC, then the Dell Latitude XT is one of the best available on the market. The key thing to remember is that this system makes a lot of compromises in order to function as a Tablet PC, so it is not as well suited to the strict ultraportable role.

Dell's second stab at a convertible Tablet PC is a superb machine which brings finger-tap support to the screen and, perhaps in a more headline-grabbing move, adds multi-touch support for good measure. The machine is pricey though. Its starting price of £1,200 comes into play before you start fiddling with the many customisation options, and before you add VAT on top. The multi-touch capability and great build quality will draw you in but you may be put off by the absence of a built-in optical drive and the amount you need to splash out to get one.

Dell’s business-friendly tablet now has a multitouch display, but this convertible’s short battery life and high price hold it back. We like the XT2’s smooth multitouch display, durable design, and speedy solid state drive. Overall, we prefer the Lenovo ThinkPad X200 Tablet with multitouch, because it offers faster performance and longer endurance for about $300 less. But if you’re a highly mobile worker looking for a design that’s easier to carry, the XT2 is worth a look. Just be sure to spring for the 6-cell battery.

The Dell Latitude XT2 packs some of the latest touch technologies in an extremely well built and good looking chassis. Build quality is above and beyond even similar Latitude series notebooks, with a very rugged chassis. The keyboard is comfortable to type on and feels almost better than the legendary ThinkPad keyboard. System performance would get a significant boost with a faster drive since the 1.8" model gets an average transfer speed of 28MB/s while most SSDs of the same size would be above 100MB/s. Overall, if you are looking for a very portable tablet designed to hold up to the rigors of daily business use, the Dell Latitude XT2 is a clear winner. The only big downside to this model is the high price tag and lower battery life, but if you can live with those it is hard to find a superior model.

Go on, grab the Dell Latitude XT2 - it just feels good. The rugged metal-alloy casing gives it a solid, substantial frame. Pick it up, and the 13.3in Dell Latitude XT2 is deceptively light (1.64kg). Put all of that together, and you seem to have a premium choice for mobility-minded businessfolk in need of a tablet PC. It has style in spades and a host of great features. But is this £1,672 inc VAT ultraportable package good for the long haul? Overall, the superslick Dell Latitude XT2 will make you the envy of the boardroom. It offers most of the bells and whistles you might need, and it runs briskly enough for you to get your work in order. This machine offers more than enough to like - except for maybe the price tag.

Tablet PCs have never taken the mass market by storm, but they still command enough of a niche following—about 7 percent of the laptop market, depending on who’s counting—to keep the major PC makers dabbling in the category. The Dell Latitude XT2, the company’s second-generation convertible tablet, delivers some welcome new features and a notably crisp, bright touch screen. The Dell Latitude XT2 costs more than a traditional 12.1-inch ultraportable, but for those who need a tablet PC and have wished for a no-compromises screen, it’s worth every penny.

Dell: Dell Inc. is a multinational technology corporation that develops, manufactures, sells, and supports personal computers and other computer-related products. Based in Texas, Dell employs more than 82,700 people worldwide (2009). In 2006, Dell purchased the computer hardware manufacturer Alienware. In most countries, the laptops are directly sold to consumers by Dell and each notebook custom-assembled according to a selection of options. Market share regarding sales of personal computers in 2007 (market research IDC): HP 18.9 %, Dell 16.4 %, Acer 9.9 %, Lenovo 7.5 %, Apple 5.7 %
Only older games can be played fluently with these graphics chips (if they were not too demanding). Shared memory graphic cores in this category got the advantage of less heat production and longer battery runtimes. For office, internet, image processing, and video editing tasks these graphics chips are still useable without any restrictions.
ATI Radeon Xpress 1250: Desktop chipset (similar to the 200M) but often misdeclared Radeon Xpress X1250.
Lower end of Graphics Cards for users who want to play games. New games should run on these cards, but only with decreased details and mediocre resolution.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD: Onboard (shared Memory) GPU built in the GM45, GE45 and GS45 chipset (Montevina). Because of two more shaders and a higher core clock, much faster than the old GMA X3100. Still not advisable for gamers (DirectX 10 games not playable or only with very low settings). The integrated video processor is able to help decode HD videos (AVC/VC-2/MPEG2) , e.g., for a fluent Blu-Ray playback with slow CPUs.
>> Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.
Intel Core 2 Duo: This is the Core Duo and Core Solo successor with a longer pipeline and 5-20% more speed without more power consumption. As an addition to the Core Duo design there exists a fourth decoder, an amplified SSE-unit and an additional arithmetical logical unit (ALU).
The Core 2 Duo for laptops is identical to the desktop Core 2 Duo processors but the notebook-processors work with lower voltages (0.95 to 1188 Volt) and a lower Frontside bus clock (1066 vs 667 MHz). The performance of equally clocked notebooks is 20-25% lower than Desktop PCs because of the lower Frontside bus clock and the slower hard disks.
12.1: This is a common display format for subnotebooks. Most netbooks have a tinier display. The advantage is, that the subnotebook can be small dimensioned and can be carried easily. Further the small display needs few energy, which improves the battery runtime and in consequence the mobility. The disadvantage is that the reading of texts is a bit exhausting for the eyes, especially with high resolutions.
>> To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.
1.69 kg:
This sub-notebook weighs less than the average of all notebooks and represents a medium class of weight among the sub-notebooks. 11 inch displays are normal for this class of weight.
1.72 kg:
These sub-notebooks weight less than the average of all notebooks, but represent a heavier class of weight among the sub-notebooks. 12 inch displays are normal for this class of weight.
73.94%: This rating is bad. Most notebooks are better rated. This is not a recommendation for purchase.
