Reviews for the Asus W2PC

67% Asus W2Pc

HD DVD and Blu-ray systems have been making sporadic appearances in PC Pro for a few months now. We've seen two machines from Sony with Blu-ray drives - the VAIO VGN-AR11S notebook and the VAIO VGX-XL202 media centre - as well as the laptop debut of HD DVD in the Toshiba Qosmio G30. The Asus W2Pc has a chassis that we've seen before, but a number of specification changes, including the important addition of an HD DVD drive, make this an interesting revision. HD fanatics will love the large, bright TFT, but its cutting-edge technology comes at a high price.

ATI Mobility Radeon X1700: Successor of the X1600 and because of strained silicium process it can achieve a higher performance with the same current consumption (more shaders). The Avivo video engine helps decoding (HD) videos.

Lower end of Graphics Cards for users who want to play games. New games should run on these cards, but only with decreased details and mediocre resolution.

Intel Core 2 Duo: This is the Core Duo and Core Solo successor with a longer pipeline and 5-20% more speed without more power consumption. As an addition to the Core Duo design there exists a fourth decoder, an amplified SSE-unit and an additional arithmetical logical unit (ALU).

The Core 2 Duo for laptops is identical to the desktop Core 2 Duo processors but the notebook-processors work with lower voltages (0.95 to 1188 Volt) and a lower Frontside bus clock (1066 vs 667 MHz). The performance of equally clocked notebooks is 20-25% lower than Desktop PCs because of the lower Frontside bus clock and the slower hard disks.

T7400:

17.1": Meanwhile the 17 inch display size is a more frequently offered standard format for desktop-replacements. The DTR-laptops can't be carried easily, need much energy but on the other side texts can be read easily and high resolutions are no problem. DTR mainly are intended for stationary usage on desks, where the weight and the energy need are unimportant.

>> To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.

3.6 kg: This laptop is heavy below average, compared with the average of notebooks. Therefore especially desktop replacements fit in this class of weight.

Asus: ASUSTeK Computer Incorporated, a Taiwanese multinational company, produces motherboards, graphics cards, optical drives, PDAs, computer monitors, notebook computers, servers, networking products, mobile phones, computer cases, computer components, and computer cooling systems. The company's 2007 revenues reached US$6.9 billion. ASUS also produces components for other manufacturers. The Eee PC initiated the netbook boom in 2008.

72.5%: This rating is bad. Most notebooks are better rated. This is not a recommendation for purchase.
