When you learn not to expect much from entry-level products, there is a better chance you'll be surprised by what you find. For example, when we first looked over the Asus K50IJ-RX05, we saw a fairly basic laptop powered by an older Intel dual-core processor. As long as you won't need more than what it already has, the budget-friendly Asus K50IJ-RX05 is money well spent.

Smart Entry-Level. At first glance, the Asus K50IJ is a stylish and inexpensive 15-inch office notebook intended for those who don't have high demands on performance. Find out in our extensive review to which degree this first impression holds good.

The ASUS K50IJ is a relatively unimpressive budget notebook that offers reasonable performance for the price, but not much else. ASUS describes this laptop as a "no-frills" computer and that is probably a nicer way of saying this laptop doesn't offer much in the way of features. Compared to similarly priced 15-inch notebooks like the Dell Studio 15 or the HP Pavilion dv5 the ASUS K50IJ falls short. Yes, you get a free laptop bag and optical mouse, but the lack of ports and upgradeability are somewhat disappointing.

Odds are that you've already committed to a lightweight laptop for next semester, say, a netbook or an Apple MacBook Pro 13-inch. What you might miss, however, is the luxury of a big screen, which, among other things, can improve the cinematic experience, enable multitasking with multiple windows, and keep scrolling down to a minimum. The ASUS K50IJ-C1 ($680 street) is a desktop replacement laptop that gives you a relatively big 15.6-inch screen and basic laptop features. The ASUS K50IJ-C1 is as cheap as a desktop replacement laptop will get without sacrificing too many features or too much performance.

Long known for its high quality, but not always for its low prices, Asus is flexing its competitive muscle in the budget-laptop arena with its K50IJ-C1 mainstream notebook. Asus calls its K50IJ series its “most aggressively priced” laptops. The K50IJ-C1, starting at $699, is indeed that. For a midsize laptop with a 15.6-inch screen, the K50IJ-C1 offers above-average performance and Asus’s winning aesthetics. With above-average performance at a competitive price, this laptop is a serious contender among budget notebooks.

The Asus K501J-BBZ5 is just about the lowest priced dual-core laptop you can find. At $529, it costs $180 more than single-core laptops such as the Compaq CQ62-215DX and the Toshiba Satellite C665-S5049. The Asus K501J-BBZ5 is a well-built, good-looking budget laptop with enough power for most home users; however, many would-be buyers will bemoan its lack of an HDMI port.

The Asus K501J-BCN5 is a member of Best Buy's Next Class program, which elicits feedback from college students about the features they want to see in a laptop. The Asus K501J-BCN5 serves up long battery life, a backlit keyboard, and a year of AV protection. Unfortunately, these Next Class features add a considerable sum to the price; we like a cheaper yet similarly configured Asus K501J model better.

Asus: ASUSTeK Computer Incorporated, a Taiwanese multinational company, produces motherboards, graphics cards, optical drives, PDAs, computer monitors, notebook computers, servers, networking products, mobile phones, computer cases, computer components, and computer cooling systems. The company's 2007 revenues reached US$6.9 billion. ASUS also produces components for other manufacturers. The Eee PC initiated the netbook boom in 2008.
Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500M: The graphics core of the Intel GL40 and GS40 chipset features a slower clocked GMA 4500MHD (400 versus 533 MHz). Because of the slower core speed, full Blu-Ray Logo support is not given and the gaming performance is a bit worse.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD: Onboard (shared Memory) GPU built in the GM45, GE45 and GS45 chipset (Montevina). Because of two more shaders and a higher core clock, much faster than the old GMA X3100. Still not advisable for gamers (DirectX 10 games not playable or only with very low settings). The integrated video processor is able to help decode HD videos (AVC/VC-2/MPEG2) , e.g., for a fluent Blu-Ray playback with slow CPUs.
» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.
Intel Pentium Dual Core: The return of the name Pentium, though it is a Yonah core. In fact, it is a double Core processor with a very good relation of performance to current consumption.
T4200:
Entry class dual core CPU with 1 MB level 2 cache and no virtualization technology. Compared to the Core 2 Duo line, some power saving mechanism are deactivated.
T4300:
Entry - middle class dual core CPU with 1 MB level 2 cache and no virtualization technology. Compared to the Core 2 Duo line, some power saving mechanism are deactivated.
T4500:
Entry to middle class dual core CPU with 1 MB level 2 cache and no virtualization technology. Compared to the Core 2 Duo line, some power saving mechanism are deactivated.
Intel Core 2 Duo: This is the Core Duo and Core Solo successor with a longer pipeline and 5-20% more speed without more power consumption. As an addition to the Core Duo design there exists a fourth decoder, an amplified SSE-unit and an additional arithmetical logical unit (ALU).
The Core 2 Duo for laptops is identical to the desktop Core 2 Duo processors but the notebook-processors work with lower voltages (0.95 to 1188 Volt) and a lower Frontside bus clock (1066 vs 667 MHz). The performance of equally clocked notebooks is 20-25% lower than Desktop PCs because of the lower Frontside bus clock and the slower hard disks.
T6500:
Entry level Penryn based dual-core CPU with a small 2MB level 2 cache and FSB800. Similar to the T6570 but without VT-x.
15.6: 15 inch display-variants are the standard and are used for more than the half of all notebooks. 15.4 inch display with 16:10 are the standard for notebook displays. However nowadays, more and more 16:9 displays with 15.6 inch appear. The reason why so many people like displays with medium size is, that this size is not exhausting for the eyes, does not need too much energy and the laptops can be kept quite compact.
» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.
2.6 kg:
This notebook is lighter than the average of all notebooks. It is too heavy for sub-notebooks. 14 inch displays are normal for this class of weight.
2.8 kg:
This weight is average for notebooks. Therefore the numerous mass of laptops with 15 inch display fits in this class of weight.
75.2%: This rating is not convincing. The laptop is evaluated below average, this is not really a recommendation for purchase.
