A new report from Bloomberg confirms that Apple is working on a set of on-ear or over-ear headphones. However, in a very Apple-like twist, the design is said to feature interchangeable parts to emphasize personal customization.

Bloomberg’s insiders have painted a little bit of clearer image of what to expect from Apple’s rumored on-ear or over-ear noise cancelling cans will look like. In a classic Apple-like twist, instead of just being like an Apple version of its Beats-branded headphone range, the new headphones will be highly customizable. The approach is said to emulate the customizability of Apple’s Watch, which has continually seen refreshes of bands over the years.

How will Apple achieve this? According to Bloomberg, both the earcups and the headband are magnetic. This will allow users to mix and match a whole range of color combinations, but taking it to the next level by including an interchangeable headband in addition to interchangeable cups. The only question is whether they will support a high-resolution Bluetooth streaming technology like aptX HD or LDAC, which is featured on most of its would-be competition.

According to the same report, there are at least two variations including a premium model with “leather-like fabrics” as well as a fitness-oriented variant that is more breathable, and presumably, some level of moisture resistance. Apparently in development since 2018, the planned launch has been pushed back at least twice already, before COVID-19 hit. Expect to see them unveiled later this year.
