Apple didn't specify available information during the new M2-powered MacBook Air's launch, but we are now getting to know that pre-orders will go live on July 8 with wide availability from July 15. The M2 MacBook Air offers a 1080p webcam, quad-speaker system, and a MagSafe 3 connector — all for US$100 less than the M2 MacBook Pro.

Apple announced the new MacBook Air powered by the M2 chip and said that availability will begin in July. However, the Cupertino-giant didn't explicitly mention a specific availability date. Now, Macrumors has learnt from a retail source about pre-order and availability dates for the Apple M2-powered MacBook Air.

According to Macrumors, pre-orders for the M2 MacBook Air will begin on July 8 for wide availability from July 15. The new MacBook Air starts from US$1,199.

Buyers can configure the M2 MacBook Air with either an 8-core or a 10-core GPU. Apple's latest thin and light laptop comes with a 13.6-inch Liquid Retina display with a 2560x1664 resolution, 500 nits brightness, P3 color gamut coverage, and True Tone. The company claims up to 18% better CPU performance and up to 35% improved GPU performance compared to a similar device with an M1 chip.

Depending on your preference, the M2 MacBook Air might seem a better option than the M2 MacBook Pro. The M2 MacBook Air offers a 1080p FaceTime webcam, quad-speaker setup, MagSafe 3 connector, and physical function keys.

The M2 MacBook Pro, on the other hand, costs US$100 more to start with but offers just a 720p webcam, stereo speakers, and the controversial Touch Bar. There's no MagSafe 3 connector available either. Going purely by Apple's spec sheets, the only advantages going for the M2 MacBook Pro compared to the Air at the moment include a two-hour longer battery life and the presence of an active cooling system.

Based on our own tests with the M2 MacBook Pro, not having an active cooling solution might be a potential bottleneck with the M2 MacBook Air, but we will reserve our judgement till we get to fully test out the Air's performance.

That being said, the M2 MacBook Air seems to be a decent upgrade over its predecessor and it is actually good to see that Apple is now able to offer a lot of hardware for the Air's asking price.
