While it might struggle with more complicated tasks, the solid build quality of the Acer Aspire One 721, plus its thin and light design and low price, make this a good choice as a basic study and work laptop. If you're after a more powerful machine for handling more complicated tasks, then the Lenovo G560 is the better choice.

The Acer Aspire One 721 isn't the fastest 11.6 inch laptop I've tested. It doesn't have the best graphics performance. And it doesn't have the longest battery life. But it's among the best performing laptops I've tested in its class, which is saying a lot since this machine is so much cheaper than the competition.

As is often the case with products that seem to bridge gaps between existing product lines, the AO721's biggest weakness is that it doesn't quite know what it wants to be. There are manufacturers, after all, who market similarly sized 11.6-inch systems as ultraportable notebooks rather than netbooks. In fact, Acer sells several. So where exactly is the line drawn?

Though, if we had to choose we'd go with the 721 -- for $80 more than the 521 you get more than just a secondary machine with its wider screen and keyboard. Of course, if you consistently demand more than four hours of battery life you'll want to go with an Intel ULV laptop, but most of them cost north of $700. And well, that's exactly what AMD's going for -- Acer now has two incredibly affordable and portable laptops that pack more performance than most netbooks and budget ultraportables on the market.

Even if you don't leave the house with your notebook often, you probably want it to last more than 3 hours on a charge, especially when it weighs less than 3 pounds. That's why we don't recommend the Aspire One 721-3574. The $429 price of this AMD machine is attractive, and you get better performance than a netbook and a full-size keyboard, but there are better options in the sub-$500 range. While its single-core CPU is slower, the $499 ASUS Eee PC 1201PN offers snappier Nvidia Ion graphics performance and longer battery life. If you have a little more money to spend, check out the Intel-powered Acer Aspire TimelineX 1830T (starting at $599), which has the same sleek design as the 721 but much better overall performance and battery life.

Netbook with subnotebook performance, round two. Like the recently tested Aspire One 521, the Aspire One 721 shows up in 11.6" format with Athlon II Neo, DDR3-RAM, ATI HD4225 and HDMI and goes head to head with the Intel-based netbook competition.

Acer: In 1976, the company was founded in Taiwan under the name Multitech and was renamed Acer or Acer Group in 1987. The product range includes, for example, laptops, tablets, smartphones, desktops, monitors, TVs and computer peripherals. Since 2007, the group has merged with Gateway Inc. and Packard Bell, which also market their own laptop product lines.
Acer computers are designed for a variety of purposes, including ultrabooks for mobile use, gaming laptops for gamers, affordable options for everyday tasks, and 2-in-1 convertible laptops for versatility. Acer's product portfolio also includes tablets that offer portable computing and multimedia capabilities.
Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.
ATI Radeon HD 4225: Onboard graphics card (in the RS880M chipset) that is able to decode HD videos (thanks to the UVD2). Technically a slower clocked HD 4250.

75.73%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
