MediaTek Dimensity 1100 to be launched alongside the Dimensity 1200 on January 20

Unlike Qualcomm and Samsung, MediaTek has been surprisingly tight-lipped about its upcoming flagship chipset. If its naming scheme is anything to go by, the top-of-the-line SoC should be called Dimensity 2000. However, a report from earlier told us that the said model isn't due for launch until 2022 and that it will reportedly feature ARM's next-generation Cortex-A79 and Cortex-X2 cores. Another report prophesized that MediaTek plans on launching the MediaTek Dimensity 1200 on January 20. It will allegedly be joined by a MediaTek Dimensity 1100.

Weibo stalwart Digital Chat Station has stated that the Dimensity 1100 is a lower-binned version of the soon-to-be-released Dimensity 1200. The MediaTek Dimensity 1100 chipset is expected to come with four Cortex-A78 (2.6GHz) and four Cortex-A55 (2.0GHz) cores. Whether or not MediaTek will use a 1+3+4 core configuration remains to be seen. That will likely be reserved for the better-specced MediaTek Dimensity 1200, with the lower-end Dimensity 1100 sticking to MediaTek's tried and tested 4+4 core configuration. Digital Chat Station's post is quite ambiguous in that regard, so we have to wait a bit before we know for sure. The lack of a Cortex-X1 core on either SoC is a tad disappointing, though.

Other expected MediaTek Dimensity 1100 specifications include an ARM Mali-G77 GPU, support for 108MP camera sensors, 1080p 144Hz screens, UFS 3.1 storage and LPDDR4x RAM. With the Dimensity 1200 slated to make its debut alongside the Redmi K40 series, it'll be interesting to see where MediaTek plans on unveiling the Dimensity 1100. As is the case with most MediaTek chipsets, it will very likely be alongside another Chinese-origin smartphone. That being said, the Dimensity 1100 runs the risk of being overshadowed by its objectively more powerful sibling. It'll be interesting to see how MediaTek incentivizes OEMs to pick it over Dimensity 1200.
