You can now add your driver’s license to Google Wallet in more States — here's how

Google Wallet is expanding support for digital IDs, letting residents in more U.S. states store their driver's licenses or passports on their phones. The update also brings new privacy-first age verification using zero-knowledge proofs, with wider support coming soon.

Google Wallet is quietly becoming more than just a digital wallet for your cards. It’s now your ticket through airport security, your digital proof of age, and, increasingly, your mobile ID.

If you live in certain U.S. states, you can now store your driver's license or state ID in Google Wallet and use it in supported locations, including TSA checkpoints and the DMV. Google is also expanding support internationally, with the UK now included in the rollout.

With the REAL ID enforcement deadline set for May 7, 2025, storing your ID on your Android device could save you time at the airport, especially if you're missing a REAL ID-compliant physical card.

And while it's not a full replacement (you still need to carry your physical license), it’s a useful backup for situations where your phone is the only thing you’ve got on hand.

Which States support digital IDs in Google Wallet

If you’re in California, Arizona, Colorado, Maryland, Georgia, or New Mexico, you can already add your ID to Google Wallet. New states are coming online too. Google says residents in Arkansas, Montana, Puerto Rico, and West Virginia will soon be able to add their government-issued ID cards to the app.

Google confirmed in its latest blog post that it’s also working with state DMVs so you can use your digital ID in more places, like for vehicle registration or driver license renewals.

How to add your license to Google Wallet

If your state is supported, getting started is pretty straightforward. Open the Google Wallet app, tap “Add to Wallet,” and then select “ID Card.”

The app will guide you through taking photos of the front and back of your ID and recording a short selfie video for facial verification.

Once verified by your state’s DMV, your ID will appear in the app — ready for use at supported locations. But don’t ditch your physical card just yet. As Google points out, a digital ID “should not be considered a replacement” for your real one.

Where you can use your digital ID

You can currently use your digital ID at select TSA checkpoints for domestic travel. According to Google, you can also use an ID Pass created from your U.S. passport in Wallet, which helps bypass the need for a REAL ID when flying.

Just keep in mind that your digital ID won’t work everywhere. For now, it's mainly accepted at TSA security points and select government offices, with more use cases coming soon.

Support for digital ID usage is also expanding to apps and services. Soon, you’ll be able to use your Google Wallet stored ID to recover your Amazon account, access CVS and MyChart by Epic for online health services, and verify your identity on Uber.

New privacy features for age verification

Digital ID isn’t just about convenience; it’s also about privacy, something Google is trying to address with new tools. One of them is Zero-Knowledge Proof (ZKP) technology, now being built into Google Wallet.

ZKP allows you to prove your age without sharing your birthdate or other personal details. That means when an app like Bumble asks for age verification, Google Wallet can confirm you’re old enough without revealing anything more.

Google also says it will open-source this ZKP tech, making it available to other wallets and digital services.

Why this matters as the REAL ID deadline approaches

With the federal REAL ID deadline looming, more states and companies are pushing toward digital identification.

While Google Wallet’s digital ID feature isn’t yet a full substitute for your physical license, it’s one of the most widely adopted mobile ID options available right now, and it’s likely to become more common.

If you’re in one of the supported states, or if you're based in the UK with a valid passport, it might be worth setting it up now. Just don’t leave your real ID at home yet. Not everyone is ready to accept your phone as your license.
