Xiaomi was one of the pioneers of bezel-less smartphones with their Xiaomi Mi Mix, so it is no surprise that leaked photos of their Redmi Note 5 show a front profile that has a screen reaching almost to every edge. What is a little more surprising is that Xiaomi is adopting the 18:9 aspect ratio made famous on 2017 flagship phones such as the Galaxy S8 or the LG G6.

The Mi Mix and Mi Mix 2 use a design which reaches the sides and top but involves putting the camera equipment in the bottom bezel, Dell-XPS style. However, the Redmi Note 5 goes with a more traditional layout where the cameras remain on the top bezel. Not only does this make the phone appear more symmetrical, but it also avoids the awkward angles during video calls or when taking selfies. The 18:9 ratio will make the phone more comfortable to hold one-handed when compared to 16:9 devices with the same screen size — although it does make the stretch to reach the notification shade a little worse.

The other key feature that can be identified in the photos is that it comes with a dual camera setup, a step up from the single sensor on its predecessor, the Redmi Note 4. There are no indications from the photos or rumors as to whether this setup involves a monochrome sensor for extra detail capture or a telephoto lens for improved zoom performance.

I grew up in a family surrounded by technology, starting with my father loading up games for me on a Commodore 64, and later on a 486. In the late 90's and early 00's I started learning how to tinker with Windows, while also playing around with Linux distributions, both of which gave me an interest for learning how to make software do what you want it to do, and modifying settings that aren't normally user accessible. After this I started building my own computers, and tearing laptops apart, which gave me an insight into hardware and how it works in a complete system. Now keeping up with the latest in hardware and software news is a passion of mine.
