One of the leading South Korean automotive parts makers - Intops – has presented what it claims to be the world’s world’s largest smart grill at the Automotive Interiors Expo in Germany.
Visitors of the auto expo have been able to take a look at Intops’ rather sizeable for smart grill standards 1,500 mm x 400 mm creation that allows a car to show text or images on its frontal fascia.
Intops uses direct sheet forming on a plastic substrate similar to the ones that foldable phones like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 use. It allows the grill to adapt to a vehicle designer’s wishes via film insert molding, opening numerous possibilities for a display that is seamlessly integrated within a car’s grill.
After showcasing the world’s biggest smart grill at the automotive interior expo at Messe Stuttgart, Intops will be ready to take orders for mass production with a dedicated machinery it is equipping its Gumi factory with this month.
Besides the smart grill, Intops's other automotive interior innovations include insert molding equipment for pillar-to-pillar OLED displays similar to the Hyperscreen of Mercedes that is made by LG.
Smart grills are making inroads, and it won’t be long before the front of the vehicle is treated as just another display to show pertinent info or imagery on, for better or worse.
