You can finally play with your food. A free RPG with a charming retro style that can also be played on the Steam Deck, uses no AI-generated content, and is even well received by players – WendyQuest is a real surprise, because the game comes from the fast-food chain Wendy's.

Fast-food chain Wendy's released WendyQuest today, a brand-new role-playing game available for free on Steam. The game runs on both Windows PCs and the Steam Deck ($869 on Amazon), but a macOS version is not available. The game was developed by the relatively young studio 81monkeys on behalf of Wendy's.

WendyQuest features charming retro graphics that are particularly colorful and lovingly animated. The RPG follows a classic role-playing game structure, including an open world to explore and turn-based combat, enhanced with quick-time events intended to make them feel fresher. So far, WendyQuest has been reviewed by 33 players on Steam, with just under 75 percent of reviews being positive.

Polygon was able to speak with the game's developers, who said that Wendy's had reached out in 2023 via the contact form on 81monkeys' website and proposed the project itself. Since 81monkeys had already been looking for a way to fund further work on the Kickstarter-funded game World of Anterra, the team took on the project for the fast-food chain.

The game design, gameplay and story were subsequently developed in collaboration between Wendy's and 81monkeys. Wendy's involvement in the concept is evident in the game, for example in the antagonist MechBorg, who is symbolized in the game by a large, golden "M". The developers emphasize that WendyQuest was developed entirely by humans and contains no AI-generated content.
