Watchy: The open-source smartwatch with an e-Paper display will soon be available to order again
It has been almost a year since SQFMI announced the Watchy, an open-source smartwatch project that featured an e-Paper display. Now, SQFMI is making the Watchy easier to order, having brought it to Tindie. The Watchy is currently sold out on that platform, but it will soon be available on Crowd Supply. SQFMI was selling the Watchy for US$44.99 on Tindie, but it remains to be seen how much the smartwatch will sell for on Crowd Supply.
The Watchy has a 1.54-inch e-Paper display that resolves at 200 x 200 pixels, an ESP32-PICO-D4 system-in-package with an ESP32 dual-core processor and a 200 mAh battery. Additionally, SQFMI has included a micro USB port for charging, a BMA423 3 3-axis accelerometer and a DS3231 real-time clock, along with a vibration motor and four buttons.
The smartwatch supports Wi-Fi 4 and Bluetooth LE 4.2/5.x connectivity, also. Moreover, there is 4 MB of SPI flash memory. While SQFMI sells an assembled Watchy, we should point out that it encourages people to create watch faces. Thankfully, there are plenty of watch faces to choose from on GitHub and the Watchy product page.
