Void: VS Code powered open source AI code editor

Void editor is one of the latest forks of VS code and strives to be an alternative to the subscription-based code editor, Cursor. Much like Cursor, Void leans heavily into its AI capabilities. Still, unlike Cursor and Copilot, Void wants to ensure developers don't have to send their code off to proprietary models to take advantage of the AI productivity boosts. Void achieves this by connecting to locally hosted LLMs or connecting directly to a user's preferred LLM, whether Gemini, Claud, or ChatGPT. Void claims to not act as a "middleman" to developer LLM calls. 

All major AI code editing features are present in Void, such as code auto-complete, AI editing selections inline, and asking questions about your code in the sidebar. Being that Void is a fork of VS Code, which may be polarizing to some developers, Void is compatible with all of VS Codes, themes, plugins, and users can transfer all of their keybindings and settings with a single click. Additionally, Void invites developers to build on their roadmap and offer their AI integrations. Some of the community and experimental AI features that Void offers are:

Void is poised to become a significant contender in the open-source editor space. Its ties to VS Code separate it from other editors like Zed, which, despite being open source and potentially faster, do not have the same community involvement as VS Code users. At the end of the day, it is ultimately up to developers' preferences, and although there is a waitlist for an official download, curious developers can clone and test the editor for themselves.
