In addition to a gorgeous teaser video showing its first electric SUV, Sony has also announced that it will register a separate EV division called Sony Mobility Inc., which raises hopes that the Japanese tech behemoth could become a serious player in the electric car business.

Established electric car manufacturers like Tesla may soon have to deal with a new but experienced competitor from Japan. During its recently held presentation at CES 2022 in Las Vegas, the Japanese technology conglomerate Sony has officially announced its intention to stir up the EV industry with its new corporate entity named Sony Mobility Inc. The new sister company will supposedly be formed and registered this spring. Sony had already teased its first electric sedan named Vision-S 01 last year, and it has now released another concept video showing a second electric vehicle, which unsurprisingly received the temporary name Vision-S 02.

The Vision-S 02 is an electric SUV, which from certain angles appears to be fairly reminiscent of an already available EV model from another well-known American company. The aforementioned concept trailer for the Vision-S 02 does not only show beautiful scenery, but an additional UX design video gives a great impression of the interior of Sony's electric SUV, which looks very futuristic due to several gigantic panorama displays that practically cover the entire width of the dashboard.

Sony has further revealed the most basic technical specifications of its electric concept SUV. With an overall length of almost 193 inches, the Vision-S 02 slots in right between the Tesla Model Y and Model X in terms of size. The all-wheel drive electric SUV will be powered by two 200kW (268 horsepower) electric motors, and the top speed of the vehicle is said to exceed 112 miles per hour. It remains to be seen whether Sony really intends to sell its own electric cars in the future, or if the company would rather act as a supplier for various sensors and other vital EV components.
