Reviews for the Toshiba Tecra M5

Archive.org versionThe Toshiba Tecra M5 seems be something of a dying breed. While most business laptops have incorporated wide screens and more entertainment features, the Tecra M5 holds fast to its standard-aspect display and minimal media controls. That's not to say that the Tecra M5 is behind the times; it's just all business, with such corporate-friendly features as a fingerprint reader, Trusted Platform Module, and a lengthy three-year warranty. And when it came to our office productivity tests, the Tecra M5 performed as well as some laptops with higher-end components. In fact, our primary complaint relates to the system's battery life: the Tecra M5 couldn't quite hit the two-hour mark on our drain tests. If you're not planning to stray far from a power outlet, or if you can afford the extended battery ($152), the Toshiba Tecra M5 delivers a nice balance of business-friendly features and strong performance for its $1,899 price.

Archive.org versionNotebooks can be many things, they can be ultraportables stripped of everything and used for little more than email and word processing or then again, you can have a hulking desktop replacement with enough power to run a small empire. If you’re in the need of a specialised graphics card, there are many options for you to take. While there are compromises to be had with the Tecra, it represents good value for money and while it’s not the most powerful notebook out there, it’ll certainly get the job done.

Archive.org versionWith the Tecra M5, Toshiba demonstrates yet again that it knows how to build a business-focused laptop at a good price. This 5.2-pound thin-and-light has every feature mobile pros might be looking for (save one), plus a host of built-in security and durability features. Nicely configured at $1,799, this notebook won’t break the budget. Wrapped in an attractive silver metallic-flake chassis, the Tecra M5 isn’t too flashy. Lift the lid and you’ll find a bright 14.1-inch screen. The height of the 4:3 display might mean a tight fit on airplane tray tables, but the viewing-angle performance from above and side-to-side was good.

Archive.org versioni have this laptop for work, well at least i think its this model. it has the fingerprint technology, so you can basically swipe your finger instead of using your password. only problem is its like voice activation, if you dont do it exactly the same every time, you just end up putting your password in anyway. im not that technically minded, so this review might not be that helpful for all the blokes out there, but this laptop seems to have lots of features and plenty of usb ports and that, and the usual dvd/cd writer etc.

NVIDIA Quadro NVS 110M: It is based on the GeForce Go 7300 with professional certified graphics drivers for applications like CAD, Rendering, 3D modelling, etc.
Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.

Intel Core Duo: Double Core processor with a very good relation of performance to current consumption. The 2 MB L2 Cache are used together by the double. The maximum capacity of 31 watts is only 4 watts more than with the Pentium M (predecessor). Both cores are lowered automatically and independently of each other by speed steps down to 1 GHz. In addition it now supports also SSE3 instructions. At least it is just as fast as a equivalent Pentium M. With applications, which were designed for multi-processors, the performance can be nearly twice as fast as with the Pentium M (e.g. CineBench around 86% fast)
