Back to the Roots. At the moment the Toshiba Satellite L40-14N is among others top in competition about the most reasonable available notebook. It tries to especially score points by a price of clearly below 1000.- Euro and should, thereby, attract possible customers who just demand basics. Light office applications, wireless Internet access, DVD and music playback are no problem for the Satellite L40-14N.

70% Review: Toshiba Satellite L40-A I0110
Source: Techtree.com English Archive.org version
The Toshiba Satellite L40-A I0110 exhibits good overall performance. It looks good and the build quality is also not bad. Its light weight and thin profile makes it ideal to carry around. The multimedia performance is good, thanks to a nice screen, Onkyo speakers, and 1080p movie playback capability. There are ample number of ports too. If there is one area to complain about, it is the rather dismal battery life as it could have been better, considering its low-power consuming components. The Toshiba Satellite L40-A I0110 is priced at Rs 38,710.

The L40-A I0110 is priced at an MRP of Rs 38,706, which is a bit too high for an Intel Core i3-powered laptop with no discrete graphics. Agreed that it scores high on aesthetics and comes with a 750GB hard drive and good speakers, but the asking price doesn’t justify the premium. It would have been a very good deal had it been priced around Rs 35,000. Or Toshiba should have included a discrete graphics processor or touchscreen. Nevertheless, the L40-A I0110 is a worthy consideration if you need a classy looking laptop with good battery life.

Toshiba's latest range of laptops sport a smart new look, and the Satellite L40 stays true to its billing. It's a good candidate for a basic, stylish home laptop which just about ticks all the right boxes. But does that mean you should buy one?

Toshiba: Toshiba Corporation is a Japanese conglomerate or technology group. The company was established in 1939 and in 1978 Toshiba became the official company name. The company's products and services include power, industrial and social infrastructure systems, elevators and escalators, electronic components, semiconductors, hard drives, printers, batteries, lighting, logistics and information technology. Toshiba was one of the largest manufacturers of personal computers, consumer electronics, home appliances and medical equipment.

These graphics cards are not suited for Windows 3D games. Office and Internet surfing however is possible.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 900: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900 is an integrated (onboard) graphic chip with shared memory on Mobile Intel 915GM chipset. It is the predecessor of Graphics Media Accelerator 950. The performance can be compared with the Mobile Radeon 9000 (with a 64 bit memory bus).

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) X3100: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) X3100 is an integrated (onboard) graphic chip on a Mobile Intel 965GM chipset. It is the successor of GMA 950 and features a fully programmable pipeline (supports Aero Glass fully and DirectX 10 with newest drivers). The peformance of the X3100 is clearly better than the GMA 950, still demanding modern games won't run fluently.

Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.

Intel HD Graphics 3000: Integrated graphics card in the Intel Sandy Bridge processors (Core ix-2xxx). The HD 3000 is the faster (internally GT2 called) version with 12 Execution Units (EUs).

Intel Celeron M: It is a Pentium M with halved level 2 Cache and limited on FSB 400. The characteristic of this processor is the speed, which is hardly slower than an equivalent Pentium M. However it can change the speed not dynamically like the Pentium M and therefore needs without load more current.
It is also available as Low Voltage Version with very small current consumption.

540: Entry level Celeron processor based on the Merom core.

Intel Pentium Dual Core: The return of the name Pentium, though it is a Yonah core. In fact, it is a double Core processor with a very good relation of performance to current consumption.

Intel Core i3:

3227U: Ivy-Bridge-based ULV-CPU in Q1 2013. Offers a core clock of 1.9 GHz (no Turbo Boost) and an HD 4000 GPU (350 - 1100 MHz). The TDP is rated at 17 W.

14.00:

14 inch display size represents a middle ground between the small subnotebook formats and the screens of the standard 15 inch laptops.

The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, provides good resolutions with usable detail sizes, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact.

In the past, 14-inch devices were very rare, but now they are the standard for laptops after the 15-inchers.

» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.

2 kg:

2.8 kg:

With this weight, a laptop is rather heavier than average. Devices in this range shine more with screen size and performance than with mobility.

73.63%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
