Reviews for the Toshiba NB305-N410

The Toshiba NB305 is an NB200 with further improved battery life and unexceptionally slow netbook-level performance. Aside from slipping in a new Atom chip and offering coloured textured finishes, Toshiba’s designers have only succeeded in making a good netbook feel cheaper by substituting tiny keyboard keys and adding a glitz paint finish.

Toshiba's NB305 updates the company's netbook range with Intel's latest Atom processor and improved graphics, but is otherwise little changed from the previous generation. The NB305 updates Toshiba's netbook line with Intel's latest Atom processor, but performance and battery life remain about the same. However, like its predecessor, this system has a better keyboard and screen than you will find on many rivals.

Toshiba's NB300 netbook has good ease of use, it's thin and light, and it supplies a long battery life for when you're on the road. We wish it had a faster hard drive and that its screen wasn't so glossy, but these quibbles are outweighed by great battery life and a USB port that can even charge an iPhone when the netbook is powered down and sitting in a backpack.

Overall, then, the Toshiba Mini NB305-N410B is a decent netbook and probably of more interest to those entering large amounts of text while mobile. The mediocre graphics of Intel’s GMA 3150 chipset and the non-HD resolution of the NB305’s display mean this isn’t the machine you’d want to organise your multimedia life around, either. Neither is it the most long-legged of budget ultraportables, but with a balance of build quality, good looks and decent everyday performance this latest Toshiba Mini is a strong netbook choice.

While many netbooks blur into an identikit haze, one proving all but indistinguishable from another, Toshiba’s NB200 was one of the few which dared to buck the trend. Now, like every other netbook manufacturer around the world, Toshiba has given its netbook darling a lick of paint, toned down the less attractive bulges around its figure and added Intel’s latest Atom processor for good measure. Behold, the Toshiba NB305. A little more expensive than the average netbook, but then the NB305 is also a little superior

Toshiba NB305 review summary

Overall, Toshiba did it once again with the NB305. It might not be the best in terms of performances, it might not provide the best autonomy and it might not be the most affordable, but all in one, this netbook is the most comfortable to use of all. It’s light so can be carried around easily, offers still good battery life, comes with perhaps the best keyboard and touchpad seen on a netbook yet and is not a fingerprints and scratches magnet

The world of cheap, ubiquitous, and nearly identical Netbooks has been a stable and predictable landscape for a while now, and hasn't gotten any less predictable with the launch of Intel's next generation of Atom processors. With a new Atom processor and a tweaked design, the Toshiba Mini NB305-N410BN is an improvement over the already excellent NB205, at a price that's identical.

Toshiba's mini NB305-N410 may be on the more expensive side of the netbook segment, but Toshiba makes up for the higher cost with some of the best build quality on the market and definitely the best trackpad available on these small laptops. Battery life somehow manages to be below the previous NB205 and other 6-cell netbooks but it is still more than enough for most users. This is definitely one to consider if it will be used for extended periods of time thanks to its excellent quality and keyboard.

When the Toshiba mini NB205 was awarded the Editors' Choice in the netbook category, who knew its reign would last this long? The mini NB305-N410 is it's successor and will continue to thrive because it knows what netbook users want: A great user experience, a bargain price, and outstanding battery life. The Toshiba mini NB305-N410 netbook carries over many of the qualities that made its predecessor, the mini NB205 so lovable, and it's still the netbook that gives you the most for the least amount of money.

Now that we've tested a fair number of netbooks with Intel's new Atom N450 (Pine Trail) processor, it's easy to see that there is a lot of good competition. The ASUS Eee PC 1005PE lasts two hours longer on a charge than the $399 Toshiba mini NB305 and offers better speakers for $20 less. And the Acer Aspire One 532h offers comparable performance and endurance to the Toshiba for $50 less.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 3150: Integrated (shared memory) graphics card in the intel Atom N4xx CPUs. Minimally faster than an old GMA 950 and therefore not suited for 3D games or HD videos (only MPEG2 acceleration).

These graphics cards are not suited for Windows 3D games. Office and Internet surfing however is possible.

» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.

Intel Atom: The Intel Atom series is a 64-Bit (not every model supports 64bit) microprocessor for cheap and small notebooks (so called netbooks), MIDs, or UMPCs. The speciality of the new architecture is the "in order" execution (instead of the usual and faster "out of order" execution). Therefore, the transistor count of the Atom series is much lower and, thus, cheaper to produce. Furthermore, the power consumption is very low. The performance per Megahertz is therfore worse than the old Pentium 3M (1,2 GHz on par with a 1.6 GHz Atom).

N450:

Intel Atom CPU for Netbooks with integrated memory controller and GMA 3150 GPU. The performance of the system should be only minimally faster than the previous Atom N280 / GMA 950 combination.

» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.

10.10":

This is a standard display format for tablet computers or small convertibles. You see more on the screen than on a smartphone but you can't use big resolutions well. On the other hand, mobility is not a problem.

» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.

Toshiba: Toshiba Corporation is a Japanese conglomerate or technology group. The company was established in 1939 and in 1978 Toshiba became the official company name. The company's products and services include power, industrial and social infrastructure systems, elevators and escalators, electronic components, semiconductors, hard drives, printers, batteries, lighting, logistics and information technology. Toshiba was one of the largest manufacturers of personal computers, consumer electronics, home appliances and medical equipment.

80.27%: This rating is slightly above average, there are somewhat more devices with worse ratings. However, clear purchase recommendations look different.
