The key word there is standalone. You don't need to own the main game to play Fallen God, which lowers the bar for entry drastically. The game introduces a new race of trolls — not just as units, but complete with background story and unique gameplay mechanics, which means even series veterans will have something fresh to engage with.

The story puts you in the role of Akrog, a young troll chieftain trying to keep his tribe alive. The Moonkin trolls are being hunted by Elves for their tusks, enslaved by Orcs, and wiped out by a mysterious disease called "the Rot." It's a more personal, smaller-scale narrative than what the franchise usually gives its fans — survival over world-saving. The conversations are well-written and voice acted effectively, and the lore makes the world feel lived-in.

On the gameplay side, worker units automatically gather resources, and tech trees are largely linear rather than labyrinthine. This is conscious streamlining that keeps the focus on the RPG layer rather than base micromanagement. The expansion campaign alone runs 20+ hours, and skirmish modes push that further for those who are interested.
