The best way to play retro games on Android smartphones or modern PCs: ScummVM turns 20
In contrast to common gaming consoles from the past, it is oftentimes not as easy to run older games on newer PCs. This particularly applies to retro games that have been developed for MS-DOS or other antiquated operating systems. However, the free and user-friendly software ScummVM enables fans of retro games to easily play their favorite games from the past, and it has now received its 20th anniversary update.
ScummVM is not a regular emulator, but a type of virtualization software which replaces the outdated executables of overall more than 250 retro games with new ones. These have been completely rewritten and therefore iconic titles like Monkey Island, Myst and Full Throttle can run smoothly on Windows 10 (from US$129 on Amazon) PCs, macOS, Linux, Android and many more contemporary systems.
In order to play these games, the original ROM game files are required, but ScummVM also offers some freeware titles as a free download on its website. Furthermore, the anniversary 2.5.0 update added support for the 2.5D games Grim Fandango, The Longest Journey and Myst 3: Exile. If you are a fan of retro games and were wondering how to play classic PC games on your modern machine, we highly recommend checking out the official ScummVM website and all of its helpful online resources.
