Tesla outs black Model 3 and Model Y license plate frame with custom 'Powered by the Sun' tag priced at US$40

Just as it promised last month, Tesla has started selling black "satin" licence plate frames for the Model Y and Model 3 on its web store for US$40 a pop. Tesla recently stopped shipping these cars with their shiny licence plate frames, saying that it is trying to cut down on chrome usage, though the chromed ones are still available to purchase from Tesla online.

As an alternative, Tesla said, it will release new steel plate frames with "satin black" finish and it just launched those as an option to the chromed frames that will probably be available while supplies last only. Besides the dedicated black Model 3 or Model Y license plate frames, Tesla also issued a custom one that says "Powered by the Sun" instead of the model name.

This exclusive frame costs the same US$40 as the rest of them and Tesla says that "our license plate frame is constructed from stainless steel with a premium satin black finish and features a laser-etched 'Powered by the Sun' phrase inspired by the solar-powered products that are helping accelerate the transition to sustainable energy."

Unlike the more affordable Model 3 and Model Y, the premium performance Model S and Model X will keep being shipped with licence plates, and of the black variety at that. Model Y and Model 3 owners can now mix and match number plate frames, equipping them with a shiny stainless steel chromed one at the front, for instance, and a classier satin black frame at the rear, at least while the Tesla Shop supplies last.
