With a policy change, Epic Games Store now allows developers to offer free games outside of the storefront's weekly game giveaway program. The Assault: Survivor is the latest outcome of this change, and it will be available as a freebie until March 14, 2026.

Epic Games Store is holding its usual weekly giveaway, and the latest one is offering over $110 in freebies. Outside the usual program, a new free game has gone live on the storefront: The Assault: Survivor. It's from developer Black Apple, who is taking advantage of the recent policy change.

For those who missed it, developers can now offer free games outside the usual weekly giveaway program, and The Assault: Survivor is one of them. It's being offered as a freebie for a limited time, with the game set to return to its original $3.99 price tag on March 14, 2026.

As for the game itself, it looks and feels more like a small-scale project. It's described as a fast-paced action game that's set in a post-apocalyptic world. Players get to control survivors and navigate through a hostile environment that's filled with challenges.

The main goal is pretty straightforward: survive while scavenging resources and fighting mutants. Progression revolves around unlocking abilities and improving the in-game character's power, all of which make surviving slightly less challenging.

Speaking of abilities, the game has a card-based system tied to them, letting players try out different combinations for better combat. As for the enemies, there are different types of them, each with unique abilities, making each wave feel different.

Another highlight of the current free game on Epic Games Store is the online multiplayer mode. Players can team up with their friends or go for random matchmaking and go on a PvE journey. This co-op mode makes this small indie stand out a bit more.

However, it's worth noting that, as The Assault: Survivor is a small-scale project, the gameplay isn't as smooth as most other top-down action games (such as The Riftbreaker that's curr. $10.19 on Humble). Check out the screenshots attached below to learn more.
