A new study has highlighted the crucial importance of the Internet in the contemporary world and the possible ramifications of even short-term outages. The United States and China alone would account for US$21 billion in damages, nearly half the total.

According to a new Atlas VPN study, a global Internet outage could lead to a financial loss of up to US$43 billion in a single day. The United States and China, who together account for almost half of the total figure with an accumulated US$21 billion, would bear the brunt of these losses.

The study, based on the NetBlocks Costs of Shutdown tool, highlights the increasing reliance of modern economies on the Internet. An estimated US$11 billion would be lost for the US in a single day if no one had access to the Internet, mostly as a result of disruptions to consumer spending, business operations, and economic activity.

With its vast manufacturing sector and international export network, China would also suffer large losses from a day without Internet, with estimates of up to US$10 billion.

Significant economic losses were also predicted for Japan and the United Kingdom, with losses of US$3 billion and US$2.7 billion, respectively. Germany would suffer enormous losses as well; a day without Internet access has been estimated would cost the country US$1.5 billion.

It is important to note that these numbers are an estimate since Atlas VPN does not have a precise sense of possible losses.
