Having conquered the software side of music streaming, Spotify now seems intent on trying its hand at hardware. A new job listing strongly suggests that the company is in the beginning stages of creating a new wearable.

A recent job posting has been discovered by tech blog Zats Not Funny! that suggests Spotify has plans for a new piece of hardware. The company is looking to hire a Senior Product Manager for Hardware that will "lead an initiative to deliver ... a category-defining product akin to Pebble Watch, Amazon Echo, and Snap Spectacles."

The job listing further explains that the new position will basically invent the mysterious device from scratch. The Sr. Product Manager will "define the product requirements for internet-connected hardware" as well as design the software it will run and work with suppliers and manufacturers. Zats Not Funny! has also pointed out two additional job postings that may be relevant to the project: Product Manager - Voice and Director of Product, Natural Language Understanding.

A "trusted source" close to the blog has indicated that Spotify intends for this device to be a wearable, although the source did not elaborate on what kind of wearable it will be. The news is quite unusual; after all, with the company's streaming service already available on virtually every smartphone, tablet, and even smartwatch—not to mention PCs and smart TVs—as an app, what benefit would it gain from releasing a self-branded device? Only Spotify knows; maybe it will shed some light on its plans sometime soon.
