IFA 2019 | Sony Xperia 2 teaser points to compact version of Xperia 1 with 21:9 display aspect ratio
Sony has hit up the internet with a new teaser video that features the tagline “in the palm of your hand” which suggests that the device will be relatively compact. The teaser comes just ahead of IFA Berlin which kicks off this week where Sony is expected to unveil what is thought to be the Xperia 2. Rumors and leaks leading up to the event point to a device that is very similar to the 6.5-inch flagship Xperia 1 but with a smaller 6.1-inch display.
The Xperia 1 has garnered a lot of interest as it features the only 4K Ultra HD OLED HDR panel on any smartphone. However, because of its relatively extreme 21:9 display aspect ratio, it has been criticized by some as being somewhat too tall. The Xperia 2 could well appeal to those who have been put off by the height of the Xperia 1 but are intrigued by the possibility of widescreen movies without black bars appearing at the top and bottom of the display.
The Xperia 2 is also thought to feature a 4K resolution and come equipped Snapdragon 855 and the same triple camera set up as the Xperia 1, albeit aligned to the left-hand side of the device rather than the centre. Sony is also though to be prepping a direct successor to the Xperia 1 dubbed the Xperia 1R that features a massively upgraded six camera/sensor array. Originally thought to make a debut at IFA, it might be held over until CES 2020.
