Sony's VAIO Y series ultraportables may be affordable for the brand but it does cost several hundred more than the competition. What this extra money does pay for is a much more durable magnesium chassis and some peripheral ports not found on any of the competitions units. Performance is typical but the battery life is a bit below average and Sony's claims.

Sony’s first 13-inch ULV ultraportable offers a durable magnesium design, sound ergonomics, and good performance for an affordable price. Sony took its sweet time bringing its first 13-inch ULV ultraportable to market, but it was worth the wait. It offers a more durable design than the ASUS UL30A ($799) and a better touchpad than the HP Pavilion dm3 ($814 when similarly configured). But while the VAIO Y’s nearly 6.5 hours of battery life is good, both the ASUS and HP machines last over 9 hours on a charge.

If you're in the market for a CULV notebook, you have tons of options. Sony's VAIO Y doesn't really stand out above the rest in terms of raw performance, but the great style of the machine must be taken into consideration. If you're looking for something that looks a bit different (and better, we think) than the rest of the options out there, this machine might be the one for you.

Sony’s Y series VPCY115FX/BI CULV laptop offers an interesting take on this emerging segment of affordable ultraportables. It’s more expensive than most of the competition and it doesn’t last as long on battery power, but it gets a significantly nicer exterior as well as some other noticeable perks. Users that only care about the fundamentals or that are concerned with price will want to go with HP, Asus, or Toshiba, but if the extras that Sony brings to the table with the Vaio models interest you then the Y series means that you can have a nice laptop.

Sony has put an admirably classy finish on the standard thin-and-light formula with the Vaio Y, but if its complexion doesn’t make you swoon, it doesn’t offer too many other incentives to reach for the Vaio brand name. Asus’ UL30a offers a lower price, thinner form factor and better battery life, while Lenovo’s (Intel-powered) ThinkPad Edge is lighter, offers superior performance, and also runs longer.

Sony VAIO Y Review
Source: Notebookreview.com English Archive.org version
The Sony VAIO Y performed very well in our tests with the older Pentium-based model, with the latest generation including Intel Core i3 and i5 ULV processors. The VAIO Y also offers optional ATI Radeon 4550 dedicated graphics for people interested in mild gaming on the go. Compared to its bigger brother, the VAIO Z, the Y is toned-down without as many features or artistic design elements, but it still offers great build quality and very good looks. Battery life is good with the 6-cell battery; it got almost 6 hours in our lab, with an estimated 9 hours with an optional extended battery. If you're in the market for a stylish CULV-powered notebook priced under $800, the VAIO Y is a great choice and offers plenty of options to satisfy most buyers.

Styled to turn heads, the Y series is a decent laptop with good battery life and great ergonomics. The combination of light weight, good-sized screen and especially a comfortable keyboard all work well. It's powerful enough to handle itself. There's nothing wrong with it exactly, apart from the lack of a DVD drive, say, but nothing to blow your socks off.

The 13.3-inch Sony Vaio Y-series VPCY11M1E/S is the thinner, lighter brother of the Vaio S-series laptops. The Sony Vaio VPCY11M1E/S isn't thin, light or powerful enough to win our hearts, but it is comfortable to use, and its funky bundled software allows you to share media between the laptop and other devices, such as a PlayStation 3 or television.

Core Refresh. Sony trades the Core 2 Duo SU7300 for a Pentium U5400, but keeps its successful concept. Integrated graphics, aluminum/magnesium case and a keyboard with a strong feedback. Will summer really be fun with the 13.3 incher?

We were impressed by the portability of Sony's new Y Series laptop, and it's refreshing to see an ultraportable at such an affordable price. However, the flawed build quality and subdued performance are real turn-offs, and make this a difficult laptop to recommend. If power isn't a priority, the VAIO VPCY is worth considering alongside the excellent Asus UL20A. However, if your budget can stretch to it, we highly recommend the Fujitsu Lifebook P770 or Sony VAIO VPCZ11Z9E/B, which pack a lot more power into a similarly light and compact chassis.

As I spent my time with the Sony VAIO VPCY216FX/G, I inevitably compared the machine to the VAIO VPCZ125GX that I reviewed not long ago in my mind. The Sony VAIO VPCY216FX/G I am looking at today is no comparison to that other VAIO in performance or price. The VPCZ125GX sells for over $2000, whereas the Sony VAIO VPCY216FX/G today can be found for under $800. Consider the performance you are getting and the price of the Sony VAIO VPCY216FX/G has performance that isn't on par with its cost for many tasks.

With its trim dimensions, colorful lid, rounded display hinges, and isolated keyboard, the $799 Sony Vaio VPC-Y218FX certainly looks the part of a stylish laptop for home or campus use. The Sony Vaio VPC-Y218FX is trim and boasts a bevy of wireless connectivity options, but its build quality is substandard and its ULV processor doesn't offer enough gains in battery life to offset its lackluster performance.

It's small, it's light, it looks good and it performs reasonably well. Overall, the Sony VAIO Y Series is a great ultraportable notebook, and even though it has a few design quirks there is plenty to like about it. It has a competitive price tag of $1099, which we think is great for a notebook of this size and quality.

Sony Vaio Y Series Review: Proving Fusion's Potential
Source: PC Perspective English Archive.org version
The underside of the Sony Vaio Y reveals a single access panel that covers both the hard drive and the RAM. It is secured by three screws and then snaps out. The force required to remove the panel, along with the thinness of the plastic it’s made out of, made this an uncomfortable process. Once uncovered, however, the hard drive and RAM are easily accessible.

Review: Sony Vaio YB
Source: ITNews Australia English Archive.org version
One thing that we wish Sony had done was slap more memory into the Vaio YB. While 2GB is pretty standard for netbooks, the GPU part of the E-350 eats up 400MB right off the bat. Bumping the RAM up to 3 or 4GB would just give that little bit of extra buffer so memory didn't become an issue when running heavy loads. Overall though, it is a minor qualm over a product that generally exceeds our expectations.

Sony's VAIO VPC-YB15KX/S offers a more powerful alternative to those looking at a netbook with the ability to handle multitasking and high definition video. The problem is HP's Pavilion dm1z which provides similarly performance and features but at a lower price tag and with longer battery life. So unless you need a larger hard drive, HP provides the better overall value.

If it were just more useable, I'd have an easier time recommending the Y Series laptop, even at the somewhat steep price of $600. But it's a big stretch to ask that much for a laptop with a keyboard that makes typing difficult, a really small touchpad, and a standard-definition Webcam.

Sony Vaio YB review – an affordable AMD powered Vaio, with ups and downs
Source: Netbooklive English Archive.org version
If you want a Sony Vaio for your everyday tasks and some multimedia use, this is the one for you, especially if you are on a budget and crave for a light and compact laptop. However, if you’re looking for the best 11.6 inch device around 500-600 bucks, I’m afraid this is not the one, as other notebooks manage to outbeat it in terms of finish quality , ergonomics (keyboard and trackpad) and especially battery life.

The AMD Fusion chip in this computer does outperform standard integrated graphics that 99% of all other similar laptops have. While it might not be the fastest chip out there, especially compared to some other more "powerful" laptops available, it's light years better than the Intel Atom chip you'll find in netbooks. For multitasking and productivity use, you'll find the Sony VAIO VPC-YB15KX/S delivers an excellent experience. Playing today's 3D games is even possible with this laptop, but expect to turn down the settings to get a playable experience. For battery life, we got between 4-5 hours of battery life, which is either on par or above average for other similar ultraportables.

One of the surprise laptop stars of 2011 has been AMD's new Fusion platform, combining a CPU and GPU on a single chip, and providing a low-cost and decent performance upgrade to Intel's Atom platform. Sony ditches the Netbook for this more upscale AMD-powered ultraportable, with good performance and features, but also an upscale price.

But the best thing about the Sony VAIO Y Series is undoubtedly the cost. If the laptop itself is one step up from the world of netbooks, so too is the price of only £429 inc VAT, and that makes it a hugely appealing purchase. It’s almost as light as a netbook, will run more demanding applications, and has the battery life to last a long flight, all of which make it an intriguing budget alternative for the more discerning traveller.

Slickly designed hybrid: Sony Vaio YB Series review
Source: APC Mag English Archive.org version
The downside to this model would have to be the trackpad. We found it too small, too slick and too inconsistent – a surprise in a Sony product, where product interaction is usually half the story. Unfortunately, we kept on pressing the Assist button instead of the power button (which is in the hinge of the unit) out of habit, which would boot up a recovery environment instead of Windows 7 Home Premium

The one thing we don't like about the Sony VAIO YB Series laptop is its touchpad, which was sometimes unresponsive when we dragged our finger across its bottom half. Apart from that and the slow hard drive, we have few complaints. The screen's colour and clarity is among the best (if not the best) we've seen in a sub-$1000 laptop, the HDMI port allows you to plug in to a big-screen TV with ease, and the laptop's base barely gets warm even after prolonged periods of use.

The Sony VAIO YB has plenty going for it, from its gorgeous design to its top-notch media player software. However, lower-priced competitors such as the HP Pavilion dm1z and the Lenovo ThinkPad X120e offer longer battery life, better keyboards, and superior sound. Nevertheless, the VAIO YB is the sexiest 11-incher under $600 on the market today.

Vaio discount. With a price tag of under 500 Euros, Sony's 11.6 inch subnotebook is entering an aggressively priced market segment. There's a lot like about the 11.6in Sony Vaio Y from its comfortable keyboard to its reasonably long battery life and bright screen. Best of all is its low price of £343 ext VAT. Although we suspect similarly-priced budget ultraportable laptops with equally good battery life based on Intel processors will soon be available, for now the Vaio Y is a good choice if you need a light laptop at a low price.

Sony Vaio YB35 – Review
Source: Gadgetmix English Archive.org version
The Sony Vaio YB35 offers solid performance and good battery life, all in an 11-inch shell for first-rate portability. One area where the low-voltage CPU does pay off is in battery life – the Vaio YB35 delivered almost five hours of video-looping, which should translate to a full day of sensible use at the office or on the road. That even beats the MacBook Air’s battery performance.

The Sony VAIO VPC-YB35KX has plenty going for it, like an 11.3-inch screen, a strong combination of processing and graphics, 500GB hard drive, and a comfortable full-size keyboard. It's enough to provide on the go productivity without making some of the sacrifices required by 9- and 10-inch netbooks, or dealing with the lack of office functions in tablets. You will, however, find similar features and better battery life in the $450 HP Pavilion dm1z, which is why it remains our Editors' Choice.

Overall in terms of performance, the AMD E-450 Fusion processor is slower in general compared to Intel Core i5 processors, so keep that in mind. With this "lesser" processor, you get added battery life and a less expensive cost. We found performance to be decent, but did notice some rare choppiness while watching streaming HD video, so that's most likely due to the CPU not able to keep up with the onboard graphics.

The Netbook is dead; long live the new Netbooks. Atom-toting 10-inch laptops might be a thing of the past, but the 2011 trend of sticking low-power processors in small-screened computers is alive and well. The more affordable and better-performing Sony Vaio YB35KX/B is a modest improvement on the last YB model we reviewed, adding up to a full-featured but cramped 11-inch laptop that'll cost a lot less than an ultrabook.

Mobility? Limited. Sony ranks the Vaio VPC-YB3V1E/S as a particularly slim notebook, but also explicitly avoids labeling it as a "netbook". This raises a rather important question: is this a premium netbook or truly an entry-level notebook? Our following review and tests will answer this question and more.

Sony: Sony Corporation is one of the largest Japanese electronics companies. The company was founded in 1946 under a different name and initially produced rice stoves. The company launched the first transistor radio. In 1958, the company was renamed Sony. Sony is a combination of the Latin word sonus (sound) and the English word sonny (little boy). Today, its core business is consumer electronics. The company is engaged in the development, design, manufacture and sale of electronic equipment, instruments, devices, game consoles and software. Sony operates in the following segments: Gaming and Network Services, Music, Images, Home Entertainment and Sound, Imaging Products and Solutions, Mobile Communications, Semiconductors, Financial Services and Others.

Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) HD Graphics: Onboard graphics card that is built in the new Arrandale CPUs (Core i3 / i5 / i7 Dual Cores). Depending on the model and Turbo Boost, the GMA HD is clocked between 166 and 766 MHz.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD: Onboard (shared Memory) GPU built in the GM45, GE45 and GS45 chipset (Montevina). Because of two more shaders and a higher core clock, much faster than the old GMA X3100. Still not advisable for gamers (DirectX 10 games not playable or only with very low settings). The integrated video processor is able to help decode HD videos (AVC/VC-2/MPEG2) , e.g., for a fluent Blu-Ray playback with slow CPUs.

AMD Radeon HD 6310: Integrated graphics card in the Zacate netbook processors (e.g. E-350 and E-240) featuring an UVD3 video decoder and no dedicated memory.

AMD Radeon HD 6320:

Integrated graphics card in the Zacate netbook processors (e.g. E-450) featuring an UVD3 video decoder and no dedicated memory. Thanks to TurboCore, it can automatically overclock to 600 MHz.

These graphics cards are not suited for Windows 3D games. Office and Internet surfing however is possible.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 950: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 is an integrated (onboard) graphic chip on Mobile Intel 945GM chipset. It is a faster clocked version of the GMA 900 and supports no hardware T&L (Transform & Lightning) accelleration (which is required for some games).

Intel Core 2 Duo: This is the Core Duo and Core Solo successor with a longer pipeline and 5-20% more speed without more power consumption. As an addition to the Core Duo design there exists a fourth decoder, an amplified SSE-unit and an additional arithmetical logical unit (ALU).

The Core 2 Duo for laptops is identical to the desktop Core 2 Duo processors but the notebook-processors work with lower voltages (0.95 to 1188 Volt) and a lower Frontside bus clock (1066 vs 667 MHz). The performance of equally clocked notebooks is 20-25% lower than Desktop PCs because of the lower Frontside bus clock and the slower hard disks.

SU7300: Slow clocked dual core processor with a low TDP of 10 Watt.

Intel Pentium Dual Core: The return of the name Pentium, though it is a Yonah core. In fact, it is a double Core processor with a very good relation of performance to current consumption.

SU4100: Entry-level dual core processor for slim and light subnotebooks. Due to the Pentium name, the CPU may have less power saving features than Core 2 Duo processors.

Intel Pentium:

U5400: Entry level dual core CPU of the Arrandale series. Does not support Turbo Boost (for the CPU), Hyperthreading, Virtualization and AES. Due to the slow clock speed, the performance is only sufficient for non demanding applications.

Intel Core i3:

330UM: The Core i3-330UM is a power efficient ultra low voltage processor for laptops without Turbo Boost and AES functions. Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (Intel HD Graphics with 166-500 MHz) and a DDR3-800 memory controller are also included in the package.

380UM: The Core i3-380UM is a power efficient ultra low voltage processor for laptops without Turbo Boost and AES functions (compared to the i5 and i7 UM CPUs). Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (Intel HD Graphics with 166-500 MHz) and a DDR3-800 memory controller are also included in the package.

AMD E-Series:

E-350: Dual Core low power processor with an integrated graphics cards. The processor is on a level with Celeron SU2300 (1.2 GHz) and the GPU part about as fast as an Nvidia ION (2).

E-450:

Dual Core low power processor with an integrated graphics cards. The processor is on a level with Celeron SU2300 (1.2 GHz) and the GPU part about as fast as an Nvidia ION (2).
